NPFL fines Wikki Tourists N7.5m For Security Breach after crowd disturbances marred their matchday 25 encounter against Katsina United in Bauchi on Sunday evening.
The Nigeria Premier Football League confirmed the sanctions in an official statement issued on Tuesday, citing multiple violations of its framework and regulations.
The keenly contested fixture ended in a dramatic 4-4 draw, but post-match reports focused more on crowd misconduct than the thrilling eight-goal spectacle.
According to the league body, Wikki Tourists failed to provide adequate and effective security throughout the encounter at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium.
Supporters of the Bauchi-based club were accused of engaging in unsporting behaviour capable of bringing the game into disrepute during and after proceedings.
Match officials reported that dangerous objects, including stones, were thrown toward the visiting team and referees, creating panic inside the stadium.
The NPFL described the incident as a serious breach of its safety and security regulations, stressing that clubs must take responsibility for their supporters.
“The league has zero tolerance for acts that endanger players, officials and fans,” part of the statement from the NPFL board read.
It added: “Clubs are reminded of their obligation to guarantee adequate security before, during and after matches in line with established guidelines.”
As part of the punishment, Wikki Tourists have been fined the sum of N7.5 million for the various infractions committed during the encounter.
The Bauchi Elephants have also been banished from their traditional home ground, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, pending further review.
Their subsequent home fixtures will now be played at the New Jos Stadium as the league seeks to ensure safety and restore order.
League officials maintained that the decision to move matches away from Bauchi was necessary to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.
“The safety of all stakeholders remains our top priority,” the NPFL statement continued. “Appropriate sanctions will always follow confirmed breaches.”
Katsina United officials were said to have lodged complaints over the treatment of their players and technical crew during the chaotic scenes.
A source close to the visiting team disclosed that some players required medical attention after objects were thrown toward the dugout area.
Despite the controversy, the league commended match officials for completing the fixture under difficult circumstances.
Football stakeholders have since reacted to the development, calling for stricter enforcement of stadium security protocols across NPFL venues.
A former NPFL referee, who preferred anonymity, stated: “Sanctions like this send a strong message that indiscipline will not be tolerated.”
He added that consistent enforcement would help improve the league’s image and attract potential sponsors and investors.
Wikki Tourists have been given 48 hours from the date of notification to either accept the ruling or file an appeal.
Should the club decide to appeal, the case will be reviewed in accordance with the NPFL’s disciplinary procedures.
The incident has once again raised concerns about crowd control and infrastructure challenges in domestic Nigerian football.
Security experts insist that collaboration between clubs, local authorities and private security outfits is vital for safer match environments.
