NiMet Identifies States at Risk of Flooding in July

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flash flood alert for the month of July 2025, warning that several states across the country are likely to experience varying degrees of flash flooding due to intensified rainfall activities.

According to the alert, released by the agency on Monday, Sokoto State faces a high probability of experiencing flash flood events this month.

In addition to Sokoto, other states expected to be significantly affected include Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet explained that the forecast was based on meteorological data indicating the likelihood of heavy and prolonged rainfall across different regions of the country.

The agency emphasized that these weather conditions could lead to flash floods, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems or near water bodies.

In response to the anticipated threat, NiMet issued several precautionary recommendations for residents of the listed states.

The agency urged individuals and communities in high-risk areas to consider relocating to safer locations, where possible.

Residents were also advised to clear drainage channels, prepare emergency response kits, and turn off electricity and gas supplies when flooding occurs to avoid electrocution or fire outbreaks.

Furthermore, communities were encouraged to adopt preventive measures against mudslides, particularly in hilly or erosion-prone regions.

NiMet reiterated the importance of community awareness and preparedness to mitigate the potential impacts of these flooding events.

The agency stressed the need for collaborative efforts between government authorities, emergency response agencies, and residents to minimize property loss and ensure public safety during the peak of the rainy season.

As rainfall intensifies across Nigeria, NiMet’s alert serves as a timely reminder of the growing threat of climate-induced disasters and the critical importance of proactive disaster management and preparedness at all levels.
