Nigerian Army debunks mutiny claims, reaffirms discipline, troops welfare commitment

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports of mutiny threats over salaries, describing them as false, while reaffirming discipline, unity and ongoing welfare reforms.

The Nigerian Army has strongly refuted widespread online claims suggesting that soldiers are threatening mutiny over alleged dissatisfaction with salaries and allowances, describing the report as misleading, unfounded and dangerous to national stability.

The military authorities warned that such narratives are capable of undermining public confidence and weakening trust in one of the country’s most critical security institutions.

In an official statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army categorically stated that there has been no indication, discussion or intention of mutiny among its personnel.

According to the statement, the publication was not only sensational but also relied on anonymous and unverifiable sources, which do not reflect realities within the force.

Colonel Anele emphasized that mutiny is regarded as one of the most serious offences under military law, carrying severe consequences.

She stressed that such an act is alien to the values, discipline and professional conduct instilled in members of the Nigerian Army, who are trained to remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces at all times.

The Army explained that internal mechanisms exist for addressing concerns related to welfare, promotions and entitlements, noting that personnel are encouraged to follow established procedures rather than resort to unofficial channels or public speculation.

It added that soldiers are professionally guided to resolve grievances through structured command systems designed to ensure fairness and accountability.

Addressing claims surrounding pay and entitlements, the Nigerian Army clarified that promotion increments represent only one component of a broader remuneration structure.

The statement explained that military earnings include consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational and field allowances, as well as hardship and special duty benefits, all of which vary depending on deployment location, qualifications and assigned responsibilities.

The Army further disclosed that issues related to Army salaries and allowances are continuously reviewed within approved government frameworks.

It noted that welfare policies are not static, but are assessed periodically in response to economic realities, operational demands and the wellbeing of personnel and their families.

In recent years, the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government institutions, has embarked on several welfare-focused reforms.

These initiatives include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances for troops in high-risk zones, improved barracks accommodation, upgraded medical services and expanded insurance coverage for personnel and their dependants.

According to the statement, the Chief of Army Staff has, since assuming office, prioritized troop welfare by engaging appropriate government authorities to address pressing concerns.

These engagements, the Army said, are already producing gradual but measurable improvements, reinforcing morale across various formations.

The military leadership also dismissed suggestions of neglect, stating that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demonstrated sustained commitment to strengthening the Armed Forces.

This commitment, it said, is evident in policy decisions aimed at improving military welfare, logistics and operational effectiveness amid evolving security challenges across the country.

Reiterating its position, the Nigerian Army described itself as a united, disciplined and professional force, fully focused on its constitutional responsibilities.

It stressed that the institution remains steadfast in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, combating internal security threats and supporting civil authorities where necessary.

Military authorities warned that spreading unverified reports of mutiny allegations is not only irresponsible but also poses risks to national security.

Such narratives, the statement noted, can embolden hostile elements, weaken morale and create unnecessary panic among citizens.

The Army therefore urged members of the public to exercise caution when consuming information from online platforms, especially content attributed to unnamed sources.

It advised Nigerians to rely solely on official communication channels for accurate updates concerning the Armed Forces and the Nigerian Army in particular.

As misinformation continues to spread rapidly through digital media, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and timely communication, assuring citizens that it remains stable, professional and fully committed to safeguarding the nation.
