NGX market capitalisation soars 37.7%, reflects strong investor confidence

Nigeria’s capital market continues to show signs of resilience and investor optimism as the NGX market capitalisation surged by 37.7 per cent, climbing to N141.75 trillion as of September 2025, from N102.94 trillion recorded during the same period in 2024.

This impressive performance, according to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), reflects renewed investor confidence, increased market activity, and the successful implementation of technology-driven reforms aimed at deepening participation in the nation’s financial ecosystem.

The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Temi Popoola, described the growth as a significant milestone that reinforces the connection between capital market strength and community well-being.

“At NGX Group, we believe that building strong capital markets goes hand in hand with building strong communities,” Popoola said.

“Inclusive growth and social well-being are the true foundations of a resilient economy.”

NGX market capitalisation reflects broader economic progress

The remarkable increase in NGX market capitalisation is not merely a financial statistic — it signifies growing trust among domestic and foreign investors in Nigeria’s economic direction.

Market analysts have linked the performance to government reforms, stable monetary policies, and digital expansion efforts by the NGX Group.

Under Popoola’s leadership, the NGX has focused on integrating sustainability and technology into its operations, positioning itself as a driver of inclusive growth and long-term value creation.

The Group’s social impact initiative, Project BLOOM (Bringing Life to Our Overlooked Minors), exemplifies this vision.

Implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Government and the Health Emergency Initiative, the programme has directly supported more than 200 children and 180 caregivers in underprivileged communities like Ajegunle and Yaba, offering therapeutic nutrition, medical treatment, and health education.

According to Popoola, such social interventions are crucial to maintaining a balance between profitability and sustainability.

“We are judged not only by the wealth we help create but also by how equitably that wealth is distributed and how sustainably it is generated,” he said.

Technology driving inclusivity in Nigeria’s capital market

The surge in NGX market capitalisation has also been driven by the Group’s push for digital transformation.

Its online capital-raising platform, NGX Invest, has made significant progress in making public offers and rights issues more accessible to retail investors.

Through this platform, corporates have successfully raised over N2 trillion in capital, expanding access for small investors and strengthening liquidity in the Nigerian capital market.

Market experts say the NGX Invest platform aligns with global best practices, enabling transparency, wider participation, and faster execution of capital market transactions.

Beyond inclusivity, NGX is also leading on sustainability and governance through its Nzero Initiative, which supports listed firms in measuring and reducing carbon emissions in line with international ESG standards.

Sustainability and governance strengthen investor trust

Popoola explained that prioritising environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles has enhanced the credibility and long-term attractiveness of Nigeria’s capital market.

“Our vision is to create markets that thrive in harmony with society and the environment,” he stated.

“Sustainability is not an add-on; it is central to the way we build trust and ensure that the markets continue to grow responsibly.”

By embedding sustainability into its operations, NGX Group aims to attract more institutional investors seeking markets aligned with global ESG standards, further strengthening the NGX market capitalisation and Nigeria’s appeal to international capital flows.

Bridging market performance and social development

Through initiatives like Project BLOOM and NGX Invest, the Group is actively narrowing the gap between financial market performance and societal advancement.

The company’s leadership believes that an inclusive market can only thrive when communities are empowered and given access to tools that foster economic participation.

Popoola emphasized that the NGX Group’s long-term strategy involves aligning financial performance with measurable social impact.

“We see the market not just as a platform for wealth creation but as an engine for social transformation,” he said.

He noted that by combining innovation, sustainability, and social investment, the NGX is positioning itself as a “future-ready” exchange that can compete with global peers while maintaining strong community connections.

Financial analysts have lauded the Group’s achievements, describing the rise in NGX market capitalisation as evidence of stability and strategic direction.

NGX market capitalisation

They noted that the NGX’s focus on innovation and sustainability aligns with the global trend toward responsible investment and long-term capital formation.

The NGX’s efforts also support the Federal Government’s broader economic diversification agenda by creating an environment conducive to private sector growth, infrastructure investment, and job creation.

Industry watchers predict that with the ongoing digitalisation of the market and sustained investor confidence, Nigeria’s capital market could record double-digit growth in 2026, further reinforcing the NGX’s role as a catalyst for national development.

The NGX Group’s 37.7 per cent increase in market capitalisation to N141.75 trillion underscores a broader story of resilience, innovation, and inclusion in Nigeria’s financial landscape.

Through technology, sustainability, and social impact, the NGX continues to prove that the growth of the capital market can indeed go hand in hand with the growth of the communities it serves.
