The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not given up on the country’s bid to return to the World Cup next year after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar.
According to NFF’s Media Director, Ademola Olajire, the federation is waiting for FIFA’s reaction to the case Lesotho proffered against South Africa, who fielded an ineligible player in their match on Friday.
Olajire stated, “We are waiting to see how FIFA handles the South African case. We are also assessing our position to know the best we can do to qualify for the World Cup.”
Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup were dealt a blow after a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. The Super Eagles are currently fourth in Group C with seven points, behind South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin Republic.
To qualify for the World Cup, Nigeria must finish at least second in Group C with a good points count to stand a chance of being among the best second-placed teams in the African qualifying series.
The NFF is exploring all options to salvage the country’s slight chance of making the cut to the Mundial. The federation is reportedly assessing the team’s position and looking for ways to improve their chances.
Olajire denied reports of a meeting between the NFF and Coach Eric Chelle to discuss the team’s chances, saying, “I am not aware of any meeting between the NFF president or any board member with Coach Chelle.”
The next set of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will hold in September, with Nigeria hosting Lesotho and traveling to meet South Africa in Johannesburg.
The outcome of Lesotho’s case against South Africa will be crucial in determining Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup. The NFF is keeping a close eye on developments and exploring all options to ensure the Super Eagles return to the World Cup.
