As political conversations slowly begin to tilt toward the 2027 election, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Sani Shinkafi, has delivered a pointed message to party leaders and the presidency: the will of ordinary Nigerians will matter more than shifting alliances or high-profile defections.
Speaking during a televised discussion on SYNFONI News, later circulated on social media by Dr. Kenon, Shinkafi argued that Nigeria’s democratic history shows that electoral victories are not secured merely through party structures.
Instead, he stressed that public satisfaction—or dissatisfaction—plays a decisive role in determining outcomes.
According to him, the growing trend of political defections should not be mistaken for a guarantee of electoral strength.
While party leaders often celebrate new entrants as proof of expanding influence, Shinkafi maintained that such movements may have limited impact if the broader electorate feels neglected.
He cautioned that in the 2027 election, the real contest will be between political establishments and the Nigerian masses.
To reinforce his argument, he revisited past electoral cycles. He cited the 2015 presidential race, where an incumbent administration lost power despite commanding a significant number of state governments and lawmakers.
That election, he suggested, underscored how voters can override entrenched political dominance when driven by a desire for change.
He also reflected on the 2023 general elections, pointing to how candidates outside the traditional two-party dominance were able to secure significant victories in strategic locations.
Shinkafi noted that even without extensive political machinery, a candidate can prevail if public enthusiasm and trust align in their favor. These examples, he said, should serve as lessons for parties preparing for the 2027 election.
Shinkafi further recalled the political journey of Peter Obi during the 2003 Anambra State governorship contest.
At the time, Obi contested under a platform that lacked a strong nationwide structure. Yet, results later presented at the tribunal indicated substantial grassroots backing across most local government areas.

According to Shinkafi, real-time transmission of election results is achievable, given Nigeria’s expanding digital infrastructure.
He estimated that internet coverage across the country is sufficient to support such reforms.
By minimizing manual collation and reducing opportunities for manipulation, he said, confidence in election outcomes would significantly improve.
