Illegal street traders at 2nd Rainbow Junction, Mile 2, have been dislodged by Lagos authorities in a bid to improve road safety and urban cleanliness.
The Lagos State Government on Monday, September 8, carried out a major enforcement exercise at the busy 2nd Rainbow Junction, inward Mile 2, dislodging illegal street traders who had turned the area into an open market.
The action was part of ongoing efforts to restore order to highways, reduce environmental infractions, and ensure the safety of residents and road users.
The operation, which was coordinated by officers of the state enforcement team under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, was recorded and shared on social media by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
He posted a video on his official X account showing officers clearing traders and dismantling stalls that had encroached on the road corridor.
In the video, traders were seen hurriedly gathering their goods as officers moved in to reclaim the roadside space.
Many of the stalls, display tables, and makeshift structures that had long obstructed both pedestrians and motorists were removed in order to ease traffic congestion and improve the general outlook of the area.
Wahab explained that the activities of street traders at the location had become a public nuisance, causing multiple challenges for the city.
He noted that traders’ indiscriminate occupation of the roadside created bottlenecks for traffic flow, put the lives of pedestrians at risk by forcing them to walk on the main road, and worsened environmental pollution through littering and improper waste disposal.
“Our enforcement team is currently dislodging illegal street traders constituting nuisance at 2nd Rainbow Junction, inward Mile 2.
“These activities obstruct traffic flow, endanger pedestrians, and litter the environment,” Wahab stated.
The commissioner emphasized that the state government would continue to take decisive measures against illegal street trading, stressing that the administration is determined to create a sustainable and orderly city where laws guiding environmental protection are fully enforced.
“We remain committed to keeping our roads safe, clean, and free of all forms of environmental infractions.
“A sustainable environment is non-negotiable in building the Lagos of our dreams,” he added.
The latest enforcement action underscores the government’s broader urban renewal drive, which seeks to balance commerce with public safety and environmental preservation.
Wahab assured residents that more interventions would take place across major highways and public spaces in the state to discourage practices that undermine road safety and urban cleanliness.
