Kano Pillars violence erupts after Shooting Stars’ late equalizer in NPFL match, prompting outrage, arrests, and club sanctions to restore peace and discipline.
The Kano Pillars violence that erupted on Sunday, October 12, 2025, has drawn widespread condemnation from football fans, officials, and stakeholders across Nigeria.
The violent scenes unfolded at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano during a tense Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture between Kano Pillars FC and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, after the visitors scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer to draw 1–1.
What began as a thrilling contest between two of Nigeria’s most historic football clubs ended in scenes of chaos and disorder.
The match, played before thousands of passionate fans, had Kano Pillars leading until the 94th minute when Shooting Stars struck the decisive equalizer.
The goal immediately turned jubilation into anger as irate home supporters invaded the pitch, chasing Shooting Stars players, team officials, and even match referees who fled for safety.
Social media platforms were flooded with videos showing the disturbing moment the violence broke out. In several clips, visibly enraged fans are seen pursuing match officials and opposing players, throwing objects, and disrupting security lines.

Some 3SC players were later seen receiving medical attention for injuries sustained while escaping the pitch invasion.
The Kano Pillars violence quickly became a trending topic online, with many Nigerians calling on the NPFL and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to impose strict sanctions to deter future incidents.
Sports analysts described the situation as “a national embarrassment” and urged the football authorities to act decisively.
In response to the outrage, Kano Pillars Football Club swiftly issued an official statement condemning the violent behavior of a few of its supporters.
The statement, signed by the club’s Media Officer, Abubakar Isa Dandago, described the attackers as “misguided persons” whose actions do not represent the true spirit of the club or the people of Kano.
“We are pleased to confirm that players of both teams and match officials all left the stadium and its surroundings unhurt and safely escorted by the security operatives,” the club stated.
“Kano Pillars FC will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure that anyone found guilty faces the full wrath of the law.”
According to the club, the Kano Pillars violence was quickly contained by security operatives and stadium stewards, preventing further escalation.
The management commended the security agencies for their swift intervention and assured fans that measures were already being put in place to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
As part of its disciplinary response, the management of Kano Pillars announced that any individual identified as participating in the Kano Pillars violence would face an immediate 10-season ban from entering the Sani Abacha Stadium.
This unprecedented sanction, the club said, was aimed at sending a strong warning to all supporters that violence will no longer be tolerated.
The club further reaffirmed its commitment to peace, discipline, and fair play in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the NPFL.
“Football is a game of passion, but passion must be guided by respect, sportsmanship, and decorum,” the statement emphasized.
The Kano Pillars violence has reignited public debate about crowd management, fan education, and stadium security in Nigerian football.
Many Nigerians took to social media to express disappointment over the recurring pattern of hooliganism in the NPFL.
Sports commentators lamented that despite previous warnings and sanctions from the NFF, violent incidents continue to taint the image of domestic football.
Former Super Eagles player and pundit, Garba Lawal, in a televised interview, said, “This is not the first time we are witnessing such chaos. Until the league authorities make examples out of clubs whose fans misbehave, we will keep seeing this kind of shameful spectacle.”
Meanwhile, Shooting Stars officials confirmed that some of their players sustained minor injuries and that the team was traumatized by the event.
“Our players were terrified,” a club source told reporters.
“We barely escaped the pitch. It could have been worse.”
The NPFL board and the NFF have since launched a joint investigation into the incident. Early reports suggest that some suspects have already been apprehended by security operatives for questioning.
Both football bodies have pledged to ensure that justice is served and that disciplinary action is taken against anyone found culpable.
An NFF disciplinary committee member, who spoke anonymously, said, “The league must send a clear message. Stadium violence is unacceptable. Clubs must take full responsibility for their fans’ actions.”
As tension begins to ease, Kano Pillars has appealed to its loyal supporters to remain peaceful and uphold the values of the club.
The management urged fans to continue supporting the team positively and to act as ambassadors of peace and unity both on and off the pitch.
“We call on all Kano Pillars fans to conduct themselves as true ambassadors of our great club and to protect the image of the beautiful game,” the club appealed.
The Kano Pillars violence serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security and re-educate football fans on sportsmanship and discipline.
While emotions are part of football, violence and hooliganism have no place in the sport.
As investigations continue, the football community awaits the NPFL and NFF’s next steps to ensure accountability and preserve the integrity of Nigerian football.
Until decisive action is taken, the hope remains that the tragic events at the Sani Abacha Stadium will serve as a turning point toward a safer and more disciplined football culture in Nigeria.
