The Kano Correctional Service foils attempted drug smuggling at court, arresting a 20-year-old man and reinforcing efforts to maintain secure custodial facilities.
The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has successfully intercepted a 20-year-old man for allegedly attempting to smuggle Indian hemp into a custodial facility located at the Kano High Court.
The suspect reportedly concealed the substance inside a loaf of bread, intending to hand it over to an inmate during ongoing court proceedings.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnasarawa, disclosed the incident in a statement released on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
He explained that the suspect, a resident of Tishama Hotoro Quarters in Kano, was apprehended by officers from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre while inmates were being escorted to court for their respective hearings.
“This arrest highlights the unwavering vigilance of our officers in safeguarding correctional facilities,” CSC Lawan-Kofarnasarawa said.
“The suspect attempted to infiltrate a prohibited substance into the facility, but our personnel acted promptly to prevent any breach of security.”
According to the statement, the suspect’s method involved concealing the suspected Indian hemp inside a loaf of bread, which he allegedly planned to give to an inmate during the court session.
The NCoS emphasized that such attempts are taken very seriously and are treated as criminal offenses under both Nigerian law and correctional regulations.
In response to the incident, the Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, ordered that the suspect be handed over immediately to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and potential prosecution.
He noted that collaboration between correctional services and law enforcement agencies is essential for curbing the trafficking of drugs within custodial environments.
Controller Inuwa also praised the professionalism and dedication of the Officer-in-Charge of the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre, ACC Kafilu Abdullahi, and all the officers involved in the interception.
“Their vigilance prevented a serious breach in our security protocols and ensured that the correctional environment remains safe, secure, and drug-free,” he said.
The Kano Correctional Service has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a secure and controlled environment within all custodial centres across the state.
Inuwa stressed that preventing drug smuggling and other illicit activities within correctional facilities is crucial to ensuring the safety and rehabilitation of inmates.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service is not only tasked with enforcing security but also with the reformation and reintegration of offenders into society.
“Any attempt to undermine these efforts through illegal drug delivery will not be tolerated,” Inuwa added.
The controller also urged members of the public, particularly parents and guardians, to educate and caution their wards against engaging in criminal activities.
He emphasized that youths who attempt to smuggle prohibited substances into correctional facilities risk facing both criminal charges and social consequences.
This arrest follows a similar incident recently foiled by the Kano Command, reinforcing the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Service to curb crime and criminality within custodial facilities.
According to correctional officials, persistent vigilance and strict enforcement of security protocols have been instrumental in preventing the infiltration of illicit substances in the past year.
The Kano Correctional Service has repeatedly highlighted the dangers posed by drugs within custodial facilities.
Illicit substances not only threaten the safety of officers and inmates but also compromise the rehabilitation process of offenders.
By intercepting such smuggling attempts, the NCoS ensures that correctional facilities remain places of reform and reintegration rather than venues for criminal activities.
Experts in correctional management say that proactive measures, such as thorough screening of visitors and escorts during court sessions, are essential to maintaining a secure custodial environment.
The Kano Command’s latest success demonstrates the importance of continuous training, vigilance, and coordination between correctional officers and law enforcement agencies.
