Israel orders Beirut evacuation as Southern Beirut evacuation order forces hundreds of thousands to flee

The Southern Beirut evacuation order has sent shockwaves across Lebanon after the Israeli military instructed hundreds of thousands of residents in the southern suburbs of Beirut to leave their homes immediately, marking one of the most sweeping warnings issued to civilians in the Lebanese capital.

The directive, issued by the Israel Defense Forces, targets the area known as Dahiyeh, widely regarded as a stronghold of the powerful Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

Estimates suggest between 300,000 and 700,000 residents could be affected by the order, making it the first time Israeli authorities have instructed such a large population within the Lebanese capital to evacuate at once.

Previous warnings from the Israel Defense Forces typically focused on specific buildings or smaller areas before targeted strikes were carried out. Expanding the directive to multiple densely populated neighbourhoods signals a dramatic escalation in the scope of Israel’s warning strategy.

The evacuation announcement was delivered by the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who posted the warning on social media urging residents to flee immediately.

In the message directed at civilians, he said: “Save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately.” He added a stark caution to those attempting to move through the area, warning that travelling south could put civilians in further danger.

“Beware, heading south is prohibited. Any southward movement could endanger your lives. We will inform you of the safe time to return to your homes,” Adraee said in the statement.

The warning specifically covers four major neighbourhoods within the southern suburbs of Beirut — Bourj el-Barajneh, Hadath, Haret Hreik and Shiyyah — all located within the broader Dahiyeh district that has long been politically and strategically associated with Hezbollah.

The scale of the Southern Beirut evacuation order represents a major shift in the way Israel has previously warned civilians ahead of military operations. In earlier confrontations, including past clashes with Hezbollah, the Israeli military typically issued evacuation notices targeting individual buildings or blocks believed to contain militant infrastructure.

Ordering residents across multiple districts of a capital city to leave at once dramatically increases the potential scale of any upcoming military action.

Israeli officials have long accused Hezbollah of embedding military assets within civilian neighbourhoods in Dahiyeh, including weapons storage facilities, command centres and communication hubs.

The group maintains a powerful presence in the area through political offices, social institutions and residential networks, making the suburb both a symbolic and strategic hub of its operations within Lebanon.

The humanitarian implications of the Southern Beirut evacuation order could be severe. With hundreds of thousands potentially forced to leave their homes at short notice, authorities and aid organisations fear a sudden mass displacement that could overwhelm already strained services across Beirut and surrounding areas.

Lebanon is already grappling with a deep economic crisis, deteriorating infrastructure and political instability, leaving limited capacity to absorb such a large population movement.

Residents fleeing the southern suburbs may struggle to secure shelter, transportation or access to essential services such as hospitals and food supplies.

For many families living in Dahiyeh, leaving immediately may also mean abandoning homes, businesses and belongings with no certainty about when — or whether — they will be able to return.

The district itself has been a focal point during previous confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah. During earlier conflicts, Israeli airstrikes repeatedly targeted buildings and infrastructure across Dahiyeh, citing the presence of militant command centres and weapons depots.

Because of its dense population and strategic significance, any expanded military campaign in the area could carry serious risks for civilians.

So far, the Israel Defense Forces has not confirmed when potential strikes might occur or how long the evacuation order will remain in effect.

Officials only said that residents would be notified when it is safe to return to their homes. For the hundreds of thousands of people living in the affected districts of Beirut, the warning leaves little room for uncertainty — leave immediately or risk being caught in the next phase of the conflict.
