From the morning of November 12, 2025, the leafy campus of the University of Ibadan resonated with the buzz of excitement as thousands of graduates, guests and dignitaries gathered for the institution’s 77th Convocation Ceremony and Foundation Day. The ceremonial arena, the International Conference Centre, was awash with the rich colours of academic regalia, deep blue academic gowns, lemon and silver hems, and bright graduation caps, moving in stately processional lines.

The air carried a mixture of formal dignity and festive jubilation: faculty trumpets, applause echoing from the stands, and sporadic bursts of laughter and congratulations as names were read out.

The atmosphere offered a vivid spectacle , from the crisp uniforms of marshals guiding the procession, to the proud flicker of mobile-phone cameras capturing the moment.

The environment harboured both sound and movement. As name after name echoed from the podium, laughter, cheers and heartfelt congratulations filled the air. It was a day that carried both the weight of academic history and the joy of personal triumphs.

The ceremony’s soundscape deepened as the programme progressed. The soft rhythmic tap of academic caps against wooden seats marked the Chancellor’s ascent to the dais, followed by a sudden hush that settled over the hall when the Vice-Chancellor began his address. His voice carried with conviction and purpose, speaking of the university’s future and its inseparable connection to Africa’s destiny.

The university band amplified the mood with spirited percussion, prompting bursts of applause that resonated through the hall. Thunderous cheers erupted each time a graduate crossed the stage. Among the the 5,900 students being honoured , were 448 who achieved first-class distinction. The choir added emotional depth to the ceremony, their voices rising powerfully under the high ceilings, culminating in stirring harmonies that brought many families to their feet in admiration.

Amidst the colours, sounds and emotions, individual stories added depth to the day, and one such moment came from an interview with one of the graduating students, an anonymous first-class graduate from the Faculty of Science. Standing just outside the hall with their parents beaming beside them, they described the day as “the climax of years of sacrifice.”

They recalled studying during power outages, juggling academic demands with part-time work, and pushing through moments of uncertainty. “Walking across that stage felt unreal,” they said, their voice trembling with excitement. “It wasn’t just my name being called. It was every late night, every setback, every prayer. The cheers from the crowd felt like a reward not just for me, but for everyone who carried me through this journey.”

When asked about what stood out most during the ceremony, she smiled and pointed to the choir’s performance. “The anthem brought tears to my eyes. Hearing those voices rise as we stood together made it feel like we were stepping into something bigger than ourselves. It was a reminder that this journey doesn’t end here.” Her parents, visibly emotional, disclosed that the moment her name was announced “felt like time stopped,” a memory they said would remain etched in their hearts forever.

Visually, the ceremony offered an equally memorable spectacle. From the balconies, parents and well-wishers leaned forward eagerly, phones held high to capture their loved ones stepping into a new chapter.

Graduands glowed with pride as they accepted their scrolls, each handshake from the officials greeted by fresh applause and bursts of camera light. Large banners proclaiming “77 Years of Academic Excellence” framed the space, reinforcing the grandeur of the occasion and celebrating the university’s enduring legacy.

Beyond the visual and auditory splendour, the event echoed with deeper reflections. The 77th Convocation was more than a ceremonial gathering ,it was a sensory testament to the spirit of the University of Ibadan.

The mingling sounds of applause and music, the colourful swirl of gowns, and the palpable sense of accomplishment accentuated by the routine song, “Stand up for the champion”, created a mosaic of memories that will linger long after the day itself. The Vice-Chancellor’s address served as a thoughtful reminder that UI’s journey is intertwined with Africa’s broader aspirations, positioning the ceremony not just as a celebration of academic achievement but as a reaffirmation of the institution’s commitment to shaping the continent’s future.

As the ceremony drew to a close, graduates walked out beneath the Ibadan sky with more than degrees in hand. They carried the echoes of cheers, the warmth of proud embraces, and the lasting image of gowns swaying in harmony with the breeze, reminders of a defining milestone.

Also waiting for them outside were, talking drummers who were ready to beat the life of their drums just like the scorching sun outside the hall. Also with the talking drummers were panegyrists who were unapologetic about giving graduands panegyrics in indigenous languages.

For the thousands present, the 77th Convocation was not just witnessed; it was felt, heard and beautifully remembered.
