India Education Minister resigns after Cockroach youth protests force government U-turn

India education minister resigns after a week of mass protests led by the Cockroach Janata party. Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down Saturday, marking the first time public pressure forced out a Modi minister.

The resignation followed nationwide demonstrations over an exam leak scandal. Thousands gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to demand accountability and systemic reform in education.

Pradhan Steps Down Amid Student Pressure

Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation on social media Saturday afternoon. He said he submitted his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to avoid escalation.

“Considering the situation that has arisen at Jantar Mantar and across the country,” Pradhan wrote, “I have sent my resignation letter to the prime minister.”

He expressed sadness over the last 10 days. He also said he respects “the aspirations, feelings, and legitimate expectations of the country’s youth.”

For 12 years, Modi has projected an image of strong, unaccountable leadership. This marks the first major ministerial exit driven by street protests.

Cockroach Janata Party Leads Nationwide Uprising

The protests were organised by the newly formed Cockroach Janata party, or CJP. The movement grew into the largest youth-led dissent seen in years.

CJP’s core demand was simple: Pradhan must resign over the exam leak scandal. The scandal devastated millions of students and led to more than a dozen suicides.

Organizers called off the Delhi demonstration after Pradhan’s resignation. They also met senior BJP ministers to discuss next steps on Saturday afternoon.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke addressed crowds at Jantar Mantar. He praised student courage despite police violence and teargas.

“We Have Done It” — Protesters Celebrate

“We have done it,” Dipke told cheering supporters. Chants of “victory to India” and “long live the revolution” echoed through the site.

Dipke warned against making individuals into heroes. “Do not make this mistake,” he said. “The country has been ruined by making one person a hero.”

He called the resignation “just the beginning.” CJP will continue pushing for education reform and protection of democratic rights.

Lawyer Faria Asif, 26, described the moment as empowering. “This is a huge victory, not just for students, for the constitution and for the entire nation.”

Rochelle Cope, 27, called it historic. “For the first time in 12 years, someone from the government has been held accountable for wrongdoing. And it was the people.”

Exam Leak Scandal Sparks Outrage

The scandal exposed deep flaws in India’s education system. Millions of students saw their futures jeopardized by leaked papers.

More than a dozen students died by suicide, families and activists said. The tragedies fueled anger at the government’s lack of response.

Modi initially refused to sack Pradhan. That refusal became symbolic of BJP’s alleged failure to address youth issues and accountability.

For weeks the government ignored CJP. As protests swelled, officials agreed to dialogue and promised to fast-track justice for the leaks.

Police Crackdown Backfires

The movement turned dramatic on Monday. Hundreds of thousands marched in Delhi in the biggest youth protest in years.

Police responded with teargas and baton charges. Hundreds were injured, and images of violence spread rapidly online.

The crackdown backfired. More people joined sit-ins across Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Support grew into a mass movement.

Renowned activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike during the protests. He celebrated what he called “the victory of democracy, straight from the streets.”

“Do Not Mess With Cockroaches”

CJP adopted the cockroach as its symbol. The name signals resilience and survival despite attempts to crush dissent.

In its statement, CJP said: “We have a free country where we are free to express ourselves, dissent, criticise the government we elect.”

It ended with a warning: “Remember, do not mess with cockroaches.” The slogan trended across social media within hours.

For many protesters, this was their first political action. Commentators called it a “gen Z political awakening” in India.

A Turning Point For Modi Government

Modi’s government was cornered as negotiations stalled. Pradhan’s resignation was a non-negotiable demand for CJP leaders.

With protests spreading over the weekend, BJP appeared to have no option but to concede. The minister was seen as one of Modi’s most loyal aides.

Not all protesters were young. Annie Raja, 62, said: “The young people came out on the streets and they saved our democracy.”

She added that previously people lived in fear. “Now the Modi government is scared of us,” Raja said to applause.

What Happens Next

CJP says the fight is not over. The group demands systemic reforms, not just a single resignation.

Sixteen-year-old Kanishka Dabla hopes to become a doctor. “It has made us all feel very powerful,” she said. “It’s made me hopeful for my future again.”

The government has promised accountability for officials involved in the leaks. Protesters will watch closely to see if promises turn into action.

Analysts say the movement has changed political dynamics. Youth can now force concessions from a government that once seemed untouchable.

India education minister resigns protests have delivered a clear message. When students unite, even the most powerful offices must listen.
