Idris Elba hails Lagos as the world’s most amazing city

British actor and global star, Idris Elba, has showered glowing praise on Lagos, describing Nigeria’s commercial hub as “the most amazing city in the world.”

The award-winning actor made the statement during his appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Tribute Awards, where he reflected on his recent filming experience in the bustling African megacity.

Idris Elba, who co-starred in the highly anticipated film Dust to Dreams, revealed that his time in Lagos left a lasting impression on him.

He applauded the city’s infectious energy, resilience, and thriving creative scene, adding that the depth of talent he encountered on set exceeded his expectations.

“Lagos, if you’ve never been, it’s the most amazing place, city in the world. I had a great time. The talent there is incredible,” Idris Elba said to a cheering audience.

The Hollywood actor was particularly struck by the artistry he witnessed while working alongside global music legend Seal, who for the first time performed using his Nigerian accent.

Idris Elba, highlighted the moment as symbolic of Lagos’ ability to inspire authenticity and cultural pride among creatives with roots in the city.

Industry analysts note that Idris Elba’s remarks could serve as a boost for Nigeria’s film and entertainment industries, which have been steadily attracting international collaborations.

Nollywood, currently the world’s second-largest film industry by output, has increasingly become a hub for global stars seeking to explore African narratives.

Often described as Africa’s cultural heartbeat, Lagos is home to a thriving music, film, and fashion ecosystem.

From Afrobeats icons like Burna Boy and Wizkid to world-renowned filmmakers and fashion designers, the city continues to influence global pop culture.

Idris Elba’s tribute further underscores the city’s position as a creative capital with global recognition.

Observers suggest that such endorsements from international stars not only elevate Lagos’ global image but also inspire greater investment in Nigeria’s entertainment and tourism sectors.

Born to parents of Sierra Leonean and Ghanaian descent, Idris Elba has long embraced his African heritage.

Over the years, he has expressed a desire to contribute to the growth of Africa’s creative industries. In previous interviews, Elba hinted at plans to establish film production ventures across the continent, with Nigeria being a central focus.

The Beasts of No Nation actor, who has earned accolades including a Golden Globe Award, three BAFTA nominations, and six Emmy nominations, has often championed projects that spotlight African stories.

In 2016, he was named among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, cementing his status as not only a talented actor but also a cultural trailblazer.

While Idris Elba’s praise of Lagos has been warmly received by fans, it also draws attention to the city’s unique contrasts.

Lagos, with a population of over 20 million people, is famed for its creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, yet it grapples with challenges such as traffic congestion, inadequate infrastructure, and rising living costs.

Nevertheless, for many residents and visitors alike, the city’s dynamism overshadows its flaws.

Lagos remains a place where innovation thrives in the midst of adversity — a factor that may have contributed to Elba’s glowing remarks.

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s tourism sector believe Elba’s comments could spark renewed global interest in Lagos as a destination for culture, business, and entertainment.

The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority has in recent years intensified campaigns to position Lagos and other cities as attractive sites for international visitors.

Marketing experts argue that endorsements from celebrities of Elba’s calibre carry significant influence, especially for millennials and Gen Z audiences who consume global culture across platforms such as Netflix, TikTok, and YouTube.

As Idris Elba continues to pursue projects tied to Africa, industry watchers anticipate deeper collaborations between Nollywood and Hollywood.

His remarks at TIFF could mark a pivotal moment in strengthening Lagos’ global profile as not just Nigeria’s commercial hub, but also as a world-class cultural powerhouse.

For many Lagosians, Idris Elba’s words serve as a reminder of the pride they hold in their city — a place that, despite its complexities, continues to inspire stories, music, and art that travel across borders.

With Dust to Dreams set for release, the spotlight on Lagos is expected to grow even brighter, reinforcing Elba’s declaration that Lagos is indeed “the most amazing city in the world.”
