Veteran Nigerian musician, Seyi Sodimu, has reignited conversations around celebrity influence in Nigeria after asserting that Afrobeats superstar Davido possesses the social capital to win a governorship election, while Burna Boy does not wield the same level of political influence.

The music icon, best known for the evergreen hit Love Me Jeje, shared his views during a recent episode of the What I Know podcast hosted by Korty EO, alongside Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello.
His comments have since sparked widespread debate across social media, drawing attention to the varying dimensions of influence held by Nigeria’s Afrobeats Big 3 — Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.
According to Sodimu, while the trio dominates the global music scene, their impact extends into different spheres of society, with Davido standing out as a figure whose reach transcends entertainment.
Different Types of Influence Among Afrobeats Stars
Sodimu explained that each of the Afrobeats Big 3 operates within a unique lane of influence.
He described Wizkid as a “special” artist whose appeal lies in mystique, global branding, and cultural coolness, while Burna Boy commands dominance on stage through powerful performances and musical depth.
However, he argued that Davido’s influence is broader and more people-oriented, cutting across music, family legacy, philanthropy, and grassroots engagement.
In his words, Davido’s connection with ordinary Nigerians, especially youths, gives him a political edge that could translate into electoral success if he ever chose to run for public office.
Davido can win governorship election, Burna Boy can’t – Seyi Sodimu
Making his most controversial assertion, Sodimu stated that Davido could realistically win a governorship election if he contested today, while Burna Boy would struggle due to the nature of his influence.
“The Afrobeats Big 3, each one is doing it for different reasons,” Sodimu said.
“Burna Boy has conquered the stage. He is good. Wizkid is special. But Davido surpasses music. If Davido ran for governor today, he would win. I don’t think Burna Boy could win as a governor.”
The statement reflects a growing perception that Davido’s brand resonates more strongly with Nigeria’s political and social landscape, especially among young voters who dominate the country’s population.
Davido’s Political Pedigree and Grassroots Appeal
Observers note that Davido’s perceived political viability is not accidental. The singer comes from a prominent political family in Osun State.
His uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke, currently serves as the governor of the state, while the Adeleke family has long maintained influence in local politics.
Beyond family ties, Davido has consistently demonstrated grassroots engagement through philanthropy, public advocacy, and direct interaction with fans.

His high-profile donations, support for social causes, and vocal stance during moments of national discourse have strengthened his image as a people-oriented celebrity.
This combination of wealth, visibility, political lineage, and emotional connection with the masses fuels the argument that Davido could translate popularity into votes.
Burna Boy’s Influence Remains Cultural, Not Political
In contrast, Burna Boy’s influence, according to Sodimu, remains firmly rooted in music and global cultural representation.
The Grammy-winning artist is celebrated for his artistry, Afro-fusion sound, and outspoken personality, but his brand is often perceived as elite, global, and less politically accessible.
While Burna Boy commands immense respect on international stages and among music purists, Sodimu implied that political success in Nigeria requires deep grassroots engagement rather than cultural dominance alone.
Not the First Time Davido Has Been Tipped for Politics
Sodimu’s comments are not unprecedented. In 2025, former senator and media entrepreneur Ben Murray-Bruce publicly predicted that Davido would one day become the governor of Osun State.
That statement generated significant attention at the time, further fueling speculation about the singer’s political future.
Although Davido has never officially expressed interest in contesting any political office, repeated endorsements from public figures suggest that his influence is increasingly viewed beyond the entertainment industry.
Celebrity Influence and Nigeria’s Political Future

As Nigerian politics continues to evolve, the intersection between celebrity culture and governance remains a topic of intense debate.
Seyi Sodimu’s remarks highlight a broader question: can popularity, philanthropy, and cultural relevance translate into effective political leadership?
For now, Davido remains focused on music, while Burna Boy continues to push African sounds to global heights.
Yet, discussions around celebrity influence, especially claims that Davido can win a governorship election while Burna Boy can’t, underline the growing power of pop culture in shaping Nigeria’s political imagination.
Whether such influence will ever be tested at the ballot box remains to be seen.
