Global oil shock: Brent oil price surge hits $87 as Gulf conflict chokes supply

Global energy markets have been jolted by a sharp rally in crude prices as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensify. The Brent oil price surge has pushed the global benchmark close to levels not seen in more than a year, raising concerns about supply disruptions and potential economic consequences for oil-importing countries such as Nigeria.

Brent crude futures climbed toward $87 per barrel, marking one of the most significant weekly gains since 2020. The rally follows escalating military confrontations involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have disrupted tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor responsible for transporting roughly 20 percent of the world’s seaborne oil.

Market analysts say the Brent oil price surge reflects growing fears that a prolonged conflict could severely constrain global crude supply.

Brent Oil Price Surge Driven by Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

The Brent oil price surge has been closely linked to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Recent retaliatory strikes across parts of the Gulf have effectively halted or slowed tanker traffic in the region. Industry estimates suggest that nearly 15 million barrels of crude and refined petroleum products per day are now stranded or delayed as vessels wait for safer passage through the strategic chokepoint.

Energy analysts warn that any prolonged disruption could significantly tighten global supply.

Jorge Leon, head of geopolitical analysis at Rystad Energy, noted that the current shutdown of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz represents the most immediate threat to oil markets.

According to him, the waterway serves as the only maritime export route for major oil-producing states in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Any interruption to shipments from these countries could have far-reaching implications for global energy security.

The Brent oil price surge has already triggered a sustained rally in oil benchmarks worldwide.
West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the United States’ main crude benchmark, surged above $82 per barrel, its highest level since mid-2024.

The contract also recorded one of its largest single-day gains since May 2020 after jumping more than eight percent during a recent trading session.

Energy Markets React to Escalating Conflict

The current market volatility began after coordinated strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces targeted Iranian military facilities earlier in the week. The attacks triggered retaliatory missile launches across several Gulf states, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict.

Energy traders responded swiftly to the developments, pushing crude prices higher amid concerns that production or transportation infrastructure could be damaged if hostilities continue.

Market data shows Brent crude has gained more than 19 percent within five trading sessions, climbing from about $72 per barrel to nearly $87 per barrel.

If the rally holds, it would represent the largest weekly percentage increase in oil prices since the 2020 Saudi Arabia-Russia price war, when global energy markets were rocked by a sudden collapse in production agreements between major exporters.

The Brent oil price surge is also beginning to affect fuel markets in consumer economies.

In the United States, the average price of gasoline has already increased sharply, rising by nearly 27 cents per gallon within a week. Analysts say the spike reflects tightening crude supply and increased refining costs.

Implications for Nigeria and Other Oil-Importing Economies

For Nigeria, the Brent oil price surge presents a mixed economic outlook.

On one hand, higher crude prices could boost government revenues because oil exports remain a major source of foreign exchange earnings for the country. Stronger oil prices typically translate to increased fiscal inflows and improved foreign reserves.

However, the situation also carries risks.
Nigeria continues to rely heavily on imported refined petroleum products despite domestic refining capacity expanding in recent years. As global crude prices climb, the cost of refined fuel imports could also rise, potentially increasing pump prices for consumers.

Brent oil price surge

Energy economists warn that if the conflict continues and oil prices remain elevated, Nigeria could face inflationary pressure driven by higher transportation and energy costs.

Markets Watching Washington’s Next Move
Political signals from Washington have further fueled market uncertainty.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently indicated that military operations could continue for several weeks, suggesting that hostilities may not end quickly. His comments unsettled markets and pushed Brent prices past the $82 threshold earlier in the week before the rally intensified.

Energy traders are now closely monitoring diplomatic developments and shipping activity in the Gulf region. Any indication that tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is resuming normally could cool the rally.

Conversely, further escalation or additional disruptions to shipping infrastructure could send oil prices even higher.

For now, the Brent oil price surge underscores the fragile nature of global energy supply chains, particularly in regions where geopolitical tensions intersect with critical transport routes.

As markets await further developments, the trajectory of crude prices will largely depend on how quickly stability returns to the Gulf and whether major oil exporters can maintain uninterrupted production and shipments.
