Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engineer Babachir David Lawal, has formally announced his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), drawing a final curtain on his long-standing association with the party.
In a resignation letter dated June 29, addressed to the Chairman of the APC in Bangshika Ward, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal stated that his departure from the party takes immediate effect. He noted that he would announce his next political move soon.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress,” the letter read.
“In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect.

Lawal, a former National Vice Chairman (Northeast) of the APC and once a close political ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, began distancing himself from the party leadership following growing disagreements—particularly over the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket during the build-up to the 2023 general elections.
He was among the notable voices that condemned the APC’s decision to field two Muslim candidates—Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima—as presidential and vice-presidential flagbearers respectively. In protest, he openly declared his support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate.
Further signaling his shift away from the ruling party, Lawal was present on July 2 when anti-Tinubu politicians officially took over the structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). At the event, he was introduced as one of the key promoters of the opposition coalition.
This move follows an earlier development on March 20, when Lawal appeared alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to announce plans to form a political coalition aimed at countering President Tinubu’s administration.
With his formal exit from the APC and visible alignment with opposition figures, Babachir Lawal appears to be positioning himself as a significant player in the emerging political realignment aimed at challenging the current government.
