Equities firm as NGX market cap gains N138bn on investor selective buying

Nigerian equities closed the latest trading session on a positive note, as renewed interest in select stocks lifted the overall valuation of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), even amid subdued market participation and broad-based profit-taking.

The modest rally underscored cautious optimism among investors who are increasingly selective in positioning ahead of corporate earnings releases and evolving macroeconomic signals.

At the end of trading, total market value rose by N138bn to close at N102.82tn, compared with N102.68tn recorded in the previous session.

The All-Share Index advanced marginally by 214.80 points, representing a 0.13 per cent increase, to settle at 160,806.56 points.

While the gain was modest, it marked a continuation of the exchange’s resilience following recent record highs.

Market analysts said the performance reflects a balancing act between bargain hunting in fundamentally sound stocks and profit-taking by investors seeking to lock in gains after the NGX’s strong run in recent months.

NGX Market Capitalisation Rises Despite Mixed Trading Sentiment

The improvement in NGX market capitalisation came despite weaker trading activity, suggesting that price appreciation in a handful of stocks was enough to offset broader selling pressure.

A total of 645.02 million shares valued at N16.42bn exchanged hands in 44,380 deals during the session.

Compared with the previous trading day, turnover declined by 19 per cent, while the number of executed deals dropped by 10 per cent, highlighting a slowdown in investor participation.

Market breadth remained negative, as 41 stocks closed lower against 32 gainers, reinforcing the view that gains were narrowly driven.

According to market watchers, the current pattern indicates a cautious market phase, where investors are rotating funds within sectors rather than making aggressive new entries.

“The marginal increase in NGX market capitalisation shows that investors are still willing to hold quality stocks, even as they trim exposure to counters that have rallied sharply,” said an equity research analyst at a Lagos-based investment firm.

Pharmaceutical and Mining Stocks Lead Gainers

Performance across sectors was uneven, with pharmaceuticals and mining stocks emerging as key drivers of gains.

Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals topped the gainers’ table, appreciating by 10 per cent to close at N7.70 per share. May & Baker Nigeria followed closely, gaining 9.85 per cent to settle at N26.20.

E-Tranzact International advanced by 9.64 per cent to N13.65, while Multiverse Mining and Exploration rose by 9.51 per cent to close at N21.30.

Analysts attributed the strong showing in these stocks to speculative positioning and expectations of improved earnings performance, particularly within the healthcare and natural resources segments.

The gains in these counters contributed meaningfully to the uptick in NGX market capitalisation, even as broader market sentiment remained cautious.

Insurance, Energy Stocks Drag Market Breadth
On the flip side, losses were recorded in several insurance, energy, and consumer-linked stocks, reflecting sustained profit-taking.

International Energy Insurance led the decliners, shedding 9.90 per cent to close at N2.73 per share. Associated Bus Company dropped by 9.88 per cent to N4.47, while Austin Laz & Company fell by 9.84 per cent to N4.58.

Conoil also recorded significant losses, declining by 9.72 per cent to close at N169.00 per share.

Analysts noted that the sell-off in energy-related stocks was largely driven by valuation concerns and shifting expectations around oil market dynamics.

Despite these declines, the impact on NGX market capitalisation was limited, as gains in higher-weighted stocks helped stabilise the overall market value.

Banking and Industrial Stocks Dominate Trading Value

In terms of activity, Chams Plc led the volume chart with 60.46 million shares traded, followed by Linkage Assurance with 54.11 million shares and Tantalizers with 44.96 million shares.

Access Holdings also featured prominently, recording a turnover of 35.52 million shares.
On the value side, Zenith Bank emerged as the most traded stock, with transactions worth N1.51bn.

Seplat Energy followed with N1.20bn worth of shares exchanged, while Unilever Nigeria and Guaranty Trust Holding Company recorded trades valued at N1.20bn and N1.01bn, respectively.

Market operators noted that sustained activity in banking and industrial stocks continues to provide depth and liquidity, reinforcing their role as anchors of the NGX market capitalisation.

Investor Outlook Remains Cautiously Optimistic

Analysts said the current market behaviour reflects a wait-and-see approach, as investors assess the combined impact of macroeconomic reforms, interest rate conditions, and upcoming corporate earnings.

While headline indicators remain positive, underlying sentiment suggests caution rather than exuberance.

“The market is still fundamentally strong, but investors are becoming more discerning,” said a portfolio manager at a local asset management firm.

“We expect continued selective buying, especially in stocks with strong balance sheets and earnings visibility.”

The Nigerian Exchange has benefited in recent months from improved foreign and domestic investor confidence, supported by policy reforms and enhanced transparency.

However, experts caution that sustained growth in NGX market capitalisation will depend on consistent earnings performance and broader economic stability.

Near-Term Market Direction

Looking ahead, market participants expect equities to continue trading within a narrow range in the near term, with intermittent rallies driven by stock-specific developments.

The release of audited financial statements and dividend announcements is likely to shape sentiment in the coming weeks.

While volatility may persist, analysts believe that the NGX remains well-positioned for long-term growth, particularly if reforms continue to support capital inflows and deepen market participation.

For now, the modest N138bn gain in NGX market capitalisation serves as a reminder that even in cautious markets, opportunities remain for investors willing to take a selective and disciplined approach.
