As global air travel begins its traditional year-end boom, Emirates Airlines and South African Airways (SAA) have taken a major step toward strengthening passenger connectivity ahead of the festive season, announcing an expanded, fully reciprocal codeshare agreement designed to improve travel convenience across Africa and key international routes.
In a joint statement released by SAA, both carriers confirmed that the upgraded arrangement deepens their partnership of nearly three decades and broadens the range of destinations accessible on a single ticket.
The announcement comes at a strategic moment for the industry, with airlines preparing for record passenger volumes across December and January.
Expanded Connectivity to Reduce Airline Cost Burden for Travellers
Under the enhanced codeshare agreement, the focus keyword airline cost becomes central to the airlines’ goal of delivering more seamless travel options while reducing the financial and logistical burdens passengers often face.
Through the new arrangement, Emirates customers departing Johannesburg can now book single-ticket itineraries with seamless baggage transfers to Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha, as well as 13 additional African destinations including Accra, Abidjan, Kinshasa, Lagos, Lusaka, Harare, Windhoek, Victoria Falls and Mauritius.

The improved codeshare arrangement was formalised during the 2025 Dubai Airshow, where Emirates Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, Adnan Kazim, and SAA Group Chief Executive Officer, Professor John Lamola, jointly signed the agreement.
Kazim noted that collaboration with SAA has been a cornerstone of Emirates’ Africa market strategy since 1997.
He emphasised that the partnership has consistently provided passengers with reliable links to global destinations, enabling better travel experiences through one-ticket convenience and coordinated scheduling.
“Our collaboration has created reliable connectivity for passengers to explore more of the globe with simplified, seamless travel.
South Africa remains a cornerstone of our African network and one of the most consistently busy routes we serve,” Kazim said.
He added that the deepened partnership will unlock new opportunities for both airlines to meet rising customer expectations, especially during the December travel peak.
SAA Targets Stronger Hub Positioning
For South African Airways, the expanded arrangement reflects its renewed ambition to position Johannesburg as a critical aviation hub on the continent after years of restructuring and capacity rebuilding.
Prof. Lamola described the agreement as a milestone in the carriers’ 28-year relationship and a sign of strengthened cooperation that benefits South African travellers and the wider African market.

The memorandum of understanding signed alongside the new codeshare framework also signals a broader long-term strategy.

Emirates Adds Third Daily Cape Town Flight in 2026
In a related development, Emirates confirmed it will launch a third daily flight between Dubai and Cape Town starting 1 July 2026.
The additional frequency will be operated with a Boeing 777 aircraft, injecting more than 600 seats daily into South Africa’s most visited tourist destination.
The airline said demand on the Cape Town route has remained consistently strong, with sustained high seat occupancy across its current double-daily operations.
Inbound demand from Gulf Cooperation Council countries continues to grow, while outbound travel remains buoyant for Europe and the US East Coast.
