Cyberbullying charges filed in Abeokuta as Ogun Police accuse activist Just Adetoun of spreading false online claims against Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The Ogun State Police Command has initiated legal action against popular social media activist Adetoun Onajobi, also known as “Just Adetoun,” following allegations of cyberbullying and the dissemination of false information online.
The cyberbullying charges, filed before the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, have sparked renewed debate over free speech, digital responsibility, and the limits of online activism in Nigeria.
According to the police, the six-count charge was brought under relevant provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.
Investigators allege that Onajobi deliberately used social media platforms to publish content considered misleading, defamatory, and injurious to the reputation of the Ogun State Government and Governor Dapo Abiodun.
In a detailed statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Oluseyi Babaseyi, explained that the case followed a petition submitted against the activist over a series of viral videos.
In those clips, Onajobi openly criticised the governor’s performance and accused the state government of negligence in critical public safety matters.
Babaseyi revealed that the police initially opted for a non-confrontational approach by inviting the activist for questioning on January 2, 2026.
The invitation, he said, was intended to allow her respond to allegations linked to the online posts that formed the basis of the cyberbullying charges. However, she reportedly failed to appear.
Subsequently, the activist’s legal representative informed the police that she was medically indisposed and could not honour the invitation.
A medical report was submitted to support the claim. This development, however, raised suspicions within the command, prompting further investigation.
According to the police, discreet inquiries later uncovered that the medical document was forged.
The command disclosed that the doctor whose name appeared on the report was arrested and questioned.
During interrogation, the medical practitioner allegedly confessed that the document was fabricated at Onajobi’s request.
The police statement further revealed that the doctor has since been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State.
He is facing charges including conspiracy, uttering a false document, and obstruction of justice.
The police described the development as a serious attempt to frustrate lawful investigations connected to the cyberbullying charges.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command says Adetoun Onajobi has gone underground.
According to SP Babaseyi, the activist has remained evasive and has ignored all subsequent invitations extended to her by law enforcement agencies. Her current whereabouts, the police said, are unknown.
The command assured the public that it would pursue all lawful avenues to ensure she is brought before the court to answer the allegations against her.
“No individual is above the law,” the police spokesperson noted, stressing that online influence does not grant immunity from prosecution.
The case has also drawn attention to the sensitive balance between freedom of expression and criminal liability.
The police reiterated that while Nigerians have a constitutional right to express opinions and criticise public officials, such freedom does not extend to actions deemed criminal under the Cybercrimes Act.
“Freedom of speech has lawful boundaries,” the statement read.
“It does not protect the deliberate spread of falsehoods or malicious content capable of causing public unrest or reputational harm.”
At the heart of the controversy are videos posted by Onajobi following a tragic road accident in December 2025 involving Nigerian-born British boxing star Anthony Joshua. Two of Joshua’s trainers reportedly died in the crash, which occurred within Ogun State.
In her videos, the activist accused the state government of failing to respond adequately to the incident.
She alleged that there was no functional ambulance available at the time of the crash and claimed that victims were abandoned due to poor emergency preparedness.
Onajobi further alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun prioritised social events over critical public needs.
She criticised what she described as the procurement of luxury vehicles for local government chairmen while emergency services allegedly remained underfunded.
The Ogun State Government has not officially responded to the latest court action, but security sources say investigations are still ongoing.
The police also disclosed that other individuals suspected of aiding or amplifying the alleged false information online are being monitored as part of the broader probe linked to the cyberbullying charges.
Legal analysts note that the case could become a significant test of Nigeria’s cybercrime laws, particularly as they relate to political commentary, activism, and the use of social media as a tool for accountability.
As the matter heads to court, public attention remains firmly fixed on how the judiciary will interpret the cyberbullying charges, and whether the case will redefine the boundaries between digital activism and criminal liability in Nigeria’s evolving online space.
