A deadly Church attack in Anambra’s Lilu community claimed two lives, destroyed homes and worship centres, and triggered intense police operations to restore calm and find the gunmen.
A devastating Church attack in the quiet Isiokwe village of Lilu, located in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, has plunged the community into mourning after unidentified gunmen stormed St. Andrews Anglican Church, killing two people and setting several structures ablaze.

The Sunday morning violence disrupted planned worship activities and left residents in shock as they struggled to grasp the scale and cruelty of the incident.
The assailants, according to eyewitnesses, arrived heavily armed and advanced towards the church premises while worshippers were still preparing for the early morning service.
Without warning, the gunmen opened fire, causing immediate panic and sending people running in different directions.
In the chaos that followed, two individuals were fatally shot—including the wife of the church priest—while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Witness accounts described the scene as one filled with terror, confusion, and disbelief.
The attackers reportedly moved through the church compound destroying properties, setting fire to the priest’s residence, burning parked vehicles, and damaging vital sections of the main church building.
Flames and thick smoke rose above the community as residents watched helplessly from hiding spots, fearing that returning to rescue anyone might cost them their own lives.
Those who eventually emerged after the gunmen had escaped were met with a heartbreaking sight—bodies on the ground, injured worshippers crying for help, and precious structures reduced to rubble and ashes.
Many community members described the Church attack as the most horrifying incident to befall Lilu in recent years, especially because it targeted a sacred place traditionally considered a refuge of peace.
The emotional trauma of the event reverberated beyond the immediate church community, spilling into the wider Ihiala region.
Plans for worship, baptisms, fellowship meetings, and community gatherings were abruptly cancelled, replaced by fear, sadness, and unanswered questions about the identity and motives of the attackers.
Residents expressed deep concern that such violence could occur inside a religious sanctuary where people seek spiritual comfort.
In reaction to the attack, the Anambra State Police Command issued an official statement through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the killings, the destruction of property, and the ongoing investigation into the matter.
Ikenga revealed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had responded swiftly by deploying a reinforced team of security operatives to the area to prevent further violence and begin a comprehensive manhunt for the perpetrators.
CP Orutugu condemned the incident in strong terms, calling it a brutal, sacrilegious, and unacceptable assault on innocent citizens.
According to the Police Commissioner, every community in Anambra deserves to live without fear of sudden attacks by criminals who disregard the sanctity of life and the freedom to worship without intimidation.
He emphasised that the act was not just a crime against individuals but also an attack on the values of peace, coexistence, and communal stability that the people of the state hold dear.
The Commissioner assured the people of Lilu and the entire Ihiala area that the Police Command would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the culprits are tracked down.
He highlighted that modern intelligence tools, coordinated teams, and inter-agency collaborations have already been activated to fast-track results.
He further reassured residents that security operatives would remain on ground until absolute normalcy is restored.
Residents who spoke after the incident noted that the attackers operated with confidence and precision, as though they had carefully studied the church layout.
Some community sources disclosed that the gunmen first positioned themselves at strategic entry points before launching the offensive, giving them control of the environment for the duration of the attack.
This raised concerns about whether the criminals had external support or insider knowledge that aided their operation.
Community leaders have begun calling for increased security presence across rural communities in Ihiala, insisting that such violent crimes could escalate if not swiftly curtailed.
According to them, rural worship centres are becoming vulnerable targets because of limited security infrastructure around them.
They appealed to both state and federal authorities to intervene and increase patrols, surveillance installations, and rapid response units in the area.
Survivors, still visibly shaken, narrated how they hid under pews, behind buildings, and in nearby bushes as the attackers moved from one point to another.
Some of those injured were rushed to medical facilities within the region, where they are reportedly receiving treatment.
Families of the slain victims have been left to mourn unexpected losses, particularly the death of the priest’s wife, which community members described as a direct assault on spiritual leadership.
One eyewitness lamented that the tragedy appeared to receive minimal attention from broader national conversations, despite its severity.
According to him, similar incidents in other regions often spark widespread outrage, yet the grief of small communities like Lilu sometimes gets overlooked.
Amid the emotional turmoil, the church leadership has appealed for calm while urging members to rely on faith and unity as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
They also pledged to work closely with the police and provide any information or support necessary to aid the investigation.
As investigations continue, the community remains determined not to be overwhelmed by fear.
Residents have started mobilising informal surveillance groups, strengthening local vigilance teams, and coordinating with authorities to ensure that worship centres remain safe.
With the cooperation of the people and the assurance of the police, many hope that justice will be served and that such a violent Church attack will never occur again.
