Pam Bondi under fire for weaponising the DOJ, politicising justice

US Attorney General Pam Bondi faced fierce questioning at a Senate Judiciary Committee, as Democrats accused her of weaponising the DOJ while Republicans defended her leadership.

In her opening statement, Bondi said, “I came into office determined to restore justice and refocus on violent crime, ending any perception of DOJ political interference.”

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) challenged her directly, stating, “Under your leadership, the DOJ has become a shield for political allies, fundamentally compromising our nation’s law enforcement integrity.”

Responding, Bondi insisted, “these claims are political. Our department is returning to its core mission of protecting citizens and fighting actual crime.”

The indictment of former FBI Director James Comey dominated the hearing, with Democrats pressing, “was this prosecution independent, or a tool to serve political interests?”

Bondi declined, noting, “questions about private White House conversations are personnel matters. I will not discuss internal deliberations in public.”

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) added, “the DOJ’s actions under your tenure raise serious concerns about impartiality and adherence to justice.”

Bondi countered, “we are prioritising law enforcement efficiency. Allegations of political bias ignore the work done to protect communities from violent crime.”

The Jeffrey Epstein files became another flashpoint. Bondi told the panel, “I acted within my authority. Claims that politics guided my decisions are baseless.”

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island) pressed, “Reversing decisions on sensitive investigations undermines public confidence. How can Americans trust your Department of Justice?”

Bondi replied firmly, “Our duty is to enforce law impartially, not to satisfy political narratives. Focus should remain on crime prevention and citizen safety.”

The use of National Guard troops drew scrutiny, with Senator Tammy Baldwin questioning, “Do you believe federal deployments circumvent local governance?” Bondi responded, “We act only when local authorities fail to protect citizens. Safety is paramount.”

Durbin accused Bondi of reassigning career prosecutors to protect political allies, stating, “You have weaponised the DOJ, undermining its core mission of impartial justice.”

Bondi fired back: “Decisions on assignments are operational. They strengthen enforcement focus on violent crime, not politics, restoring trust in our law enforcement capabilities.”

Nearly 300 former Justice employees submitted a letter warning, “Your tenure risks irreparable damage to institutional integrity.” Bondi countered, “reforms are necessary to end prior abuses and restore focus on crime.”

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley praised Bondi, asserting, “She is restoring direction to the Department of Justice. Public safety, not politics, is now our priority under her leadership.”

The James Comey indictment remained a flashpoint. Bondi said, “This is a legal matter, pursued under law, independent of political pressure. Claims otherwise are unfounded.”

Senator Dick Durbin shot back, “Your DOJ has become a partisan weapon. The stain on our institutions will last decades.”

Bondi insisted, “The department is returning to its mission. Allegations of politicisation ignore the work protecting communities and prioritising real threats.”

Civil rights divisions have seen mass departures under Bondi, prompting Durbin to note, “Institutional knowledge is being drained, leaving justice vulnerable to political influence.”

Bondi maintained, “Departures were voluntary, and restructuring ensures DOJ divisions focus on actual crime and law enforcement effectiveness, not political vendettas.”

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said, “Your actions send a chilling message to career prosecutors. How can we ensure the Department of Justice remains impartial?”

Bondi replied, “Every action taken respects legal authority. Our mission is crime prevention and enforcement, not satisfying political agendas.”

The committee also questioned the handling of Trump associates. Senator Leahy said, “Decisions affecting politically exposed individuals threaten public trust. How do you respond?”

Bondi countered, “We operate under law, prioritising violent crime and safety. Allegations of bias overlook the department’s mission and accomplishments.”

The deployment of federal resources, especially National Guard troops, drew scrutiny. Bondi noted, “We only deploy when local governments fail citizens, ensuring public safety remains the top priority.”

Democrats accused her of undermining transparency. “Refusing answers and reversing decisions erodes trust,” said Senator Whitehouse. Bondi replied, “We operate within law and mandate, prioritising safety over political optics.”

Republicans praised her reforms, noting, “She is restoring Department of Justice effectiveness, cutting red tape, and refocusing on crime hotspots neglected under prior administrations.”

Durbin concluded, “Your tenure risks politicising justice permanently. America deserves a DOJ free from partisan influence and loyal only to the law.”

Bondi closed, “My commitment is to law enforcement, crime prevention, and citizen protection. Political narratives will not deter the department from its statutory mission.”

The hearing highlighted deep partisan divides over Department of Justice priorities, independence, and the fine line between political influence and public safety enforcement under Pam Bondi.

Observers warn that her leadership sets a precedent for politicising justice, but Bondi insists, “We focus on results, enforcement, and safety, not politics.”

As scrutiny continues, debates around DOJ independence, weaponising the Department of Justice, and political influence remain at the forefront of national discourse.
