The festive season has ushered in an unprecedented surge in domestic airfares, with some ticket prices now exceeding N300,000.
Travellers on high-patronage routes to the South-South and South-East regions have felt the brunt of the hike, which represents an increase of approximately 150 per cent compared to pre-Yuletide rates.
Industry sources say the surge is largely fueled by heightened passenger demand, compounded by a shortage of available aircraft and operational constraints.
Yuletide Airfares: Domestic Flights Witness Steep Price Hikes
Prior to the Yuletide rush, domestic airfares averaged around N120,000.
A review of airline booking platforms reveals that one-way economy tickets from Lagos to Asaba now cost between N300,000 and N337,500 for travel between December 24 and 29.
Similarly, Abuja–Delta State flights are priced from N335,500 to N240,000, depending on travel dates, while Aero Contractors and United Nigeria Airlines have ticket prices ranging from N238,452 to N399,999 on similar routes.
These staggering increases in Yuletide airfares have prompted some travellers to reconsider road transport as an alternative, despite security challenges and longer travel times.
For example, a Lagos–Asaba flight takes about 40 minutes, compared to roughly four hours by road.
Aircraft Shortages and Operational Challenges
Airline operators attribute part of the steep hike in Yuletide airfares to aircraft shortages.
Many airlines currently operate with just a fraction of their fleets due to maintenance schedules abroad and unexpected withdrawals by lessors.
Charles Grant, Chief Financial Officer of Aero Contractors, explained that Nigerian airlines collectively use only 38 serviceable aircraft, a figure insufficient to meet peak seasonal demand.
He noted that operational and regulatory challenges, coupled with multiple taxation, further exacerbate the situation, pushing fares higher.
“Most Nigerian airlines operate with just four to six active aircraft. This is not a choice; it is the result of punitive economics,” Grant said.
Similarly, Air Peace has experienced disruptions due to an unannounced withdrawal of aircraft leased from SmartLynx Airlines, despite advance payments.
Chief Commercial Officer Nowel Ngala confirmed that these sudden changes violated industry standards and caused temporary flight delays and cancellations.
“Despite these setbacks, some aircraft have completed maintenance and are returning to service,” Ngala added, reassuring passengers that operations would stabilize in the coming days.
Seasonal Demand and Passenger Trends
Experts agree that the surge in Yuletide airfares is partly seasonal. Dr. Alex Nwuba, President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Nigeria, said festive periods typically see higher travel demand, resulting in increased ticket prices.
“Airline capacity shortfalls contribute to higher fares, but the return of several aircraft and the launch of additional flights during the Yuletide period should help mitigate extreme price spikes,” he said.
Dr. Nwuba emphasized that despite disruptions, Nigerian airlines are striving to bridge the capacity gap and maintain service levels to meet rising passenger numbers.
Calls for Government Intervention
Former Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, urged the Federal Government to provide strategic support to local carriers.
He suggested reviewing Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASA) that are one-sided against Nigerian operators and reinforcing capacity expansion measures.
“Both parties in BASA must benefit. The government should protect local carriers and, if necessary, renegotiate agreements to ensure fair competition,” Demuren said.
Industry expert Olumide Ohunayo also advised airlines to focus on staff welfare and passenger service, stressing that professional handling of travellers during peak periods is crucial to sustaining customer confidence and industry reputation.
