Wike’s comments spark fear in Osun PDP over Adeleke’s 2026 re-election bid

Wike’s remarks have intensified the Osun PDP crisis, sparking fear and doubts over Governor Adeleke’s 2026 re-election and the party’s unity.

The Osun PDP crisis has taken a dramatic turn following comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, which have stirred anxiety within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State.

His remarks have not only triggered uncertainty over Governor Ademola Adeleke’s chances in the 2026 governorship election but also reopened divisions linked to the broader PDP leadership crisis rocking the party at the national level.

Wike, while speaking on a national television programme on Monday night, was asked whether the PDP would have candidates in the 2026 Osun and Ekiti governorship elections.

His response was blunt and unsettling — he declared that the PDP was “in danger,” a statement that instantly sent ripples through the political landscape in Osun.

According to Wike, he had previously cautioned Governor Adeleke about looming risks.

“Ask the governor of Osun, Adeleke,” he said. “He came to see me, and I told him, ‘You are in danger.’ I don’t like people who are not truthful. I told him about the implication of what he was doing. But there’s this spirit in governors that makes them feel they can do magic.”

These comments have deepened the Osun PDP crisis, leaving many party members uneasy. They interpret Wike’s words as a warning that internal instability and unresolved leadership issues could affect the PDP’s chances in the upcoming 2026 Osun election.

A senior party chieftain, Adewale Adegbite, voiced his concern: “You heard what Wike said. Are we not in trouble as a party? We have been preparing for the 2026 governorship election, but this comment might disrupt our focus. The PDP in Osun has been united, but this could shake our foundation.”

Another top member, who preferred not to be named, revealed that Governor Adeleke has been engaging with influential party figures to calm tensions.

“The governor is talking with major stakeholders, including Wike and Governor Seyi Makinde,” he disclosed.

“He’s determined to secure proper nomination through reconciliation. We are hopeful that the crisis will be resolved soon.”

The Osun PDP crisis reflects deeper divisions within the party’s national structure. The PDP has long struggled with internal power tussles, often between loyalists of Wike and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

This rivalry, insiders say, has filtered down to several state chapters, including Osun, where factional loyalty continues to shape political decisions.

For Governor Adeleke, the situation presents a major test of leadership. Since his victory in 2022, he has worked to strengthen his control over the party and deliver development projects that reinforce his public image.

However, observers believe the ongoing Osun PDP crisis could undermine his bid for a second term if not properly managed.

Political analyst Dr. Akeem Sulaimon noted that Wike’s comments highlight a long-standing distrust among PDP governors.

“Wike’s statement was more than a warning  it’s a reminder of unresolved grievances,” he said.

“It shows that even within the PDP governors’ forum, mutual suspicion remains high. That is why crises like the one in Osun persist.”

Despite the tension, the Osun PDP leadership insists that the situation is under control. The party’s Director of Media, Oladele Olabamji, dismissed reports of panic within the ranks.

Speaking with The Nation, he said: “We don’t foresee any danger. Governor Adeleke has already begun his nomination process, and it will be completed successfully. There’s no cause for alarm.”

Olabamji further emphasized that the governor enjoys the overwhelming support of the party’s structure and grassroots members.

“We are united behind our governor,” he added. “The PDP remains the strongest political force in Osun. Whatever challenges may exist, they are internal and will be resolved before the primaries.”

Still, some observers argue that optimism may not be enough. The Osun PDP crisis underscores the fragile balance of power within the party and the urgent need for genuine reconciliation.

If the national leadership fails to mend divisions, Osun could become a battleground that tests the PDP’s capacity to remain competitive.

Political experts believe that Wike’s outburst might also have been a strategic move. Known for his bluntness and influence, the former Rivers State governor has often used public commentary to assert control and shape internal negotiations.

His remarks, therefore, may be aimed at strengthening his faction’s bargaining power ahead of the 2026 polls.

At the grassroots, the reaction has been mixed. Some supporters view Wike’s comments as a wake-up call, urging the party to unite and correct its internal problems before it’s too late.

Others see it as an unnecessary distraction that could weaken confidence in the PDP’s readiness for the 2026 Osun election.

Governor Adeleke’s loyalists, however, remain unfazed. They argue that his popularity with the people will carry him through, regardless of internal wrangling.

“Adeleke has performed well,” said a local PDP youth leader. “His achievements in infrastructure, welfare, and education speak for him. The people of Osun will stand by him when the time comes.”

Meanwhile, national observers point out that what happens in Osun could mirror the PDP’s fate across the country.

If the party fails to manage the Osun PDP crisis, it may face similar instability in other states, threatening its chances of reclaiming power at the federal level.

As the 2026 governorship election draws nearer, the PDP’s challenge in Osun is no longer just about winning votes — it’s about survival, unity, and credibility.

How Governor Adeleke navigates the storm created by Wike’s comments will determine not only his political future but also the direction of the PDP in Nigeria’s southwest.

For now, one thing remains clear: until the Osun PDP crisis is resolved, uncertainty will continue to cloud the party’s path to the 2026 election.
