The opening goal came in the 6th minute. Alfonso Pedraza’s incisive run down the left flank delivered a dangerous cross that Mallorca’s defenders failed to intercept. The ball fell perfectly to Gerard Moreno, who calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper to give Villarreal an early advantage. This goal underlined Villarreal’s attacking ambition and the precision of their build-up play.
Mallorca responded almost immediately. Two minutes later, a loose pass from Moreno was intercepted by Jan Virgili, who found Pablo Torre. Torre’s quick combination with Samu Costa set up Luiz Júnior, who finished with a clinical strike into the bottom corner, leveling the score and injecting renewed energy into the visitors.
As the first half progressed, Villarreal vs Mallorca evolved into a tactical contest. Villarreal struggled to break down Mallorca’s disciplined defensive lines, while the visitors threatened on the counter. Mohammed Nicolas Pepe and Junior forced several saves from Mallorca goalkeeper Lucas Bergström, who was pivotal in keeping his team in the game.
Tensions flared when Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral received a yellow card for protesting a handball decision, highlighting the challenges Villarreal faced against Mallorca’s disruptive style. Despite this, the home side continued to probe for openings, relying on pace, creativity, and positional rotations to unsettle Mallorca.
The second half saw Villarreal intensify their pressure. Marcelino made a triple substitution, bringing on Georges Mikautadze and Tani Oluwaseyi among others, injecting fresh energy into the attack. Mikautadze’s initial attempts were thwarted by Bergström, who continued to keep Mallorca in contention with key saves.
