The TSA PreCheck suspension announced by the US government has triggered widespread concern across the aviation sector, with millions of registered travelers facing longer airport queues and mounting uncertainty as a partial shutdown of federal agencies grinds on.
The decision, confirmed by the US Department of Homeland Security, affects both TSA PreCheck and Global Entry and takes effect immediately at airports nationwide.
The move comes as funding negotiations in Washington collapsed, leaving key arms of homeland security operating under emergency limitations.
While core screening operations remain in place, programs designed to streamline travel for low-risk passengers have been paused, drawing sharp criticism from airlines, lawmakers and industry groups who warn the TSA PreCheck suspension will ripple across the US travel system.
A DHS spokesperson said the decision was unavoidable under shutdown conditions, noting that “shutdowns have serious real-world consequences for travelers and federal operations alike.” The department said it was prioritizing “general airport security and border integrity” over what it described as “courtesy or expedited services.”
The TSA PreCheck suspension halts access to dedicated fast-track security lanes that allow approved passengers to keep shoes and light jackets on while passing through screening.
Global Entry, which speeds customs and immigration processing for pre-approved international travelers, is also affected, forcing returning passengers into standard inspection lines at major ports of entry.
Homeland security secretary Kristi Noem defended the move, saying: “When Congress fails to act, operational decisions have to be made to protect essential security functions. These shutdowns have consequences, and unfortunately the traveling public is feeling them.”
Airlines reacted with alarm, arguing that the TSA PreCheck suspension was implemented with minimal notice. Industry officials said the sudden change left passengers unable to adjust travel plans, particularly during a busy late-winter travel period marked by school holidays and weather-related disruptions.
The trade group Airlines for America accused the administration of turning passengers into leverage in a political stalemate. Its chief executive warned that travelers were “once again being used as a political football,” adding that the loss of expedited screening would create congestion, missed connections and knock-on delays across the national aviation network.
According to airline estimates, a similar shutdown last year resulted in more than $6bn in losses across aviation, tourism and related sectors. Executives fear the TSA PreCheck suspension could have an even larger impact, given the steady growth in enrollment for trusted traveler programs over the past decade.
Democrats on Capitol Hill were quick to condemn the decision. Members of the House committee overseeing homeland security accused the administration of deliberately undermining programs that improve both efficiency and safety.
In a joint statement, committee Democrats said the government was “kneecapping programs that make travel smoother and more secure, while blaming Congress for the fallout.”
The TSA PreCheck suspension has also reignited debate over how shutdowns affect frontline government services. While airport screening continues, the loss of trusted traveler programs removes a key pressure valve that helps manage peak-time passenger flows, particularly at major hubs such as Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Officials within the Transportation Security Administration stressed that security standards would not be lowered, but acknowledged that wait times would increase.
One senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “PreCheck lanes play a significant role in managing throughput. Without them, everyone moves slower.”
At international arrival halls, the suspension of Global Entry is expected to have a similar effect. Officers from US Customs and Border Protection will continue to process travelers, but without automated kiosks and fast-track clearance, queues are expected to lengthen substantially.
The political backdrop to the TSA PreCheck suspension is a broader dispute over immigration and border enforcement funding.
Democrats and the White House failed to agree on a budget package after lawmakers pushed for changes to immigration operations that are central to President Donald Trump’s deportation strategy.
As negotiations stalled, DHS was left partially unfunded, forcing the department to triage its operations. Earlier in the week, the administration also ordered the suspension of disaster-response deployments by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, another DHS component, citing the same funding constraints.
For travelers, the immediate concern is practical rather than political. Many frequent flyers pay enrollment fees specifically to avoid long security lines, and some expressed frustration that benefits they already paid for are now unavailable. “I renewed my PreCheck in January,” said one business traveler at Washington’s Reagan National airport. “Now I’m back in the same line as everyone else.”
Travel experts warn that the TSA PreCheck suspension could disproportionately affect elderly passengers, families with children and travelers with tight connection windows. Without expedited lanes, security bottlenecks are likely to intensify during morning and evening peaks.
Airports themselves are bracing for disruption. Several major hubs issued advisories urging passengers to arrive earlier than usual and to expect extended screening times. One airport operator said privately that staffing models were built around the assumption that PreCheck would remain operational.
