Trump’s Gaza peace plan faces scrutiny as Israel escalates strikes, Hamas deliberates

As war intensifies across the Gaza Strip with soaring civilian casualties, the spotlight has shifted to US President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, unveiled this week in Washington alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While the plan has been hailed by Israel and welcomed by a range of international powers, including key Arab states, it has simultaneously drawn skepticism and raised urgent questions from Palestinians and observers who doubt its viability on the ground.

Intensified Strikes Amid Peace Proposal

On September 30, 2025, at least 43 Palestinians were reported killed in fresh Israeli bombardments across Gaza. According to medical sources, 18 of the victims were civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in central Gaza, gunned down in what witnesses described as unprovoked Israeli fire in the Netzarim Corridor, an area Israel itself designated for aid distribution.

Additional casualties were reported in Nuseirat refugee camp, where Israeli shelling struck near Al-Awda Hospital, killing three civilians and injuring hospital staff.

Residents describe Gaza City as a war zone where “every minute, there is an explosion.” Entire neighborhoods have been leveled in Israeli ground operations, even as world leaders call for restraint and Hamas’s political leadership studies Trump’s proposed ceasefire framework.

The Core of Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan

Trump’s proposal, officially presented as a 20-point framework, promises an immediate end to hostilities if accepted by both Israel and Hamas. Among its central components are:

The establishment of an international stabilization force to oversee post-war security in Gaza.

A monitored disarmament process targeting Hamas and other armed factions.

A large-scale humanitarian aid initiative, spearheaded by a coalition of US, European, and Arab states.

Steps toward rebuilding Gaza’s decimated infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and power networks.

Long-term governance discussions involving regional Arab partners, the Palestinian Authority, and local civil leaders.

Netanyahu, standing beside Trump at the White House, publicly endorsed the plan, framing it as the best pathway to restoring security for Israel while offering Palestinians a chance for reconstruction. Hamas, however, has not committed to acceptance, with leaders warning that the plan could undermine Palestinian sovereignty and sideline resistance goals.

Mixed Global Reactions

The proposal has won surprising backing from several Arab and Islamic states, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, and Egypt, alongside European allies such as France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The Palestinian Authority has also cautiously welcomed it, seeing it as a chance to reassert influence in Gaza.

Moscow voiced support as well, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling Trump’s initiative a “positive step that could end a human tragedy.”

Yet critics highlight the vagueness of crucial details, especially regarding the composition and mandate of the stabilization force, the timetable for disarmament, and whether Israel would end its blockade. Palestinian civilians, aid groups, and analysts argue that without clear guarantees of sovereignty, accountability for war crimes, and free movement for Gaza’s population, the plan risks becoming another stalled peace framework.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

While political leaders debate peace blueprints, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. Since the war reignited in October 2023, over 66,000 Palestinians have been killed and 168,000 injured, according to Gaza’s health authorities. Thousands remain missing under rubble, while Israel reports 1,139 of its citizens killed during the initial Hamas-led October 7 attacks, with around 200 still listed as captives.

Gaza’s health system is collapsing. Hospitals operate under bombardment, with shortages of fuel, medicine, and surgical equipment leaving doctors unable to treat the influx of wounded.

The United Nations and humanitarian groups have repeatedly warned that famine looms, with families resorting to “fake food” — cooking weeds or animal feed to stave off hunger. Meanwhile, flotillas of international activists attempt to break Israel’s blockade with aid deliveries, facing threats of interception from the Israeli navy. Legal experts argue such interceptions in international waters would breach international law.

Escalation Beyond Gaza

The violence is not confined to Gaza. In the occupied West Bank, tensions flared on September 30 when a car ramming at a checkpoint near Bethlehem injured three Israeli settlers. Security forces shot dead the alleged assailant. Incidents of settler violence and Palestinian resistance attacks have surged across the West Bank, highlighting the regional volatility tied to the Gaza war.

Hezbollah skirmishes continue along Israel’s northern border, while Yemen’s Houthis have expressed support for Hamas, deepening concerns that the conflict could spiral further into a broader regional confrontation. The United States maintains naval forces in the Mediterranean to deter escalation, but the persistence of airstrikes undermines diplomatic optimism.

Questions Hanging Over the Plan

For Palestinians, Trump’s plan leaves pressing uncertainties. Among the most debated are:

Who will control Gaza’s borders, airspace, and reconstruction funds?

What role, if any, will Hamas retain in governance if it disarms?

How will accountability for mass civilian casualties be addressed?

Will Israel agree to a permanent lifting of its blockade and withdrawal of its troops?

Without answers, many fear the proposal may serve more as a diplomatic tool for regional leaders than a genuine framework for justice and recovery.

Looking Ahead

The coming days will be crucial. Hamas’s internal deliberations, coupled with ongoing Israeli offensives, will determine whether Trump’s Gaza peace plan has a chance of halting the war.

International mediators, including Qatar and now Turkey, are engaged in shuttle diplomacy to bridge divides, while Washington presses for swift acceptance.

Yet for families burying loved ones under the roar of Israeli jets, diplomatic roadmaps feel distant. Until strikes cease and aid flows freely, Gaza’s humanitarian disaster will only worsen, regardless of the promises etched in Trump’s 20-point plan.

The unfolding tragedy underscores the immense gap between political negotiations in global capitals and the daily struggle for survival in Gaza’s camps, hospitals, and ruined neighborhood.
