Tinubu arrives Eyo festival venue — A powerful cultural revival moment

Tinubu arrives Eyo festival venue in Lagos

The 2025 edition of the historic Eyo Festival in Lagos witnessed a symbolic moment on Saturday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived at the Tafawa Balewa Square to join thousands of residents, cultural enthusiasts, and tourists at one of Nigeria’s most celebrated traditional ceremonies.

The President’s presence at the venue underscored renewed national recognition for the event, which had not been staged since 2017, and reinforced Lagos’ ambition to strengthen its cultural tourism profile.

President Tinubu, who has longstanding historical and political ties to Lagos, made a colourful entry into the festival arena dressed in a full white ceremonial outfit in line with the traditional aesthetics of the celebration.

His attire was complemented by a distinctive black Akete hat marked with white stripes and star imprints, paired with a black-and-white cloth draped across his shoulder — an appearance that reflected the symbolism and reverence associated with the festival.

His arrival was greeted with excitement from spectators who had thronged the square hours ahead of the ceremonial processions.

He was received at the venue by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, cabinet members, and key cultural stakeholders.

The governor described the President’s attendance as a morale boost for the festival’s custodians and an affirmation of Lagos’ leadership role in preserving Yoruba cultural heritage.

For many participants, the moment marked a bridge between tradition, identity and political symbolism, especially as Lagos positions itself as a global cultural city.

The festival, often referred to as the Adamu Orisha Play, is renowned for its white-clad masquerades known as Eyo, rhythmic chants, ceremonial dances, and deeply rooted Yoruba spiritual symbolism.

Over the years, the event has evolved beyond a traditional rite into a cultural spectacle that attracts visitors from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

This year’s return of the ceremony generated heightened anticipation, particularly among tourism stakeholders eager to see the economic and social ripple effects for local artisans, performers, hospitality businesses and transport operators

Prior to the grand procession, the city centre experienced a surge in cultural activities as various Eyo groups staged coordinated movements across designated routes.

Residents and visitors lined major streets, while security officials ensured crowd control and restricted vehicular movement around the Lagos Island axis.

Cultural advocates described the festival as a living repository of history, identity, and inter-generational continuity, noting that renewed institutional support was critical to its sustainability.

President Tinubu’s presence at the venue added a political and symbolic dimension to the ceremony, with many analysts observing that his attendance represented a convergence of governance, heritage, and community solidarity.

Supporters at the festival grounds interpreted his participation as a gesture of respect toward indigenous traditions, especially at a time when cultural revitalisation is gaining traction across Nigeria’s creative and tourism sectors.

In the period leading up to the festival, the Lagos State Government inaugurated the Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History in Onikan — a project Governor Sanwo-Olu described as a legacy emblem celebrating the city’s heritage.

The monument is expected to serve as an educational and tourism reference point, complementing broader initiatives to document, preserve and commercialise Lagos cultural assets.

Observers noted that the renewed staging of the festival after an eight-year hiatus carried strong socio-economic implications.

Beyond entertainment and ceremonial value, the event is projected to stimulate micro-economic activities across accommodation, retail trade, crafts, local markets, and transport services.

Tourism and heritage consultants emphasised that sustained investment in festivals such as the Eyo celebration could position Lagos as a competitive cultural tourism hub within West Africa.

Throughout the ceremony, spectators witnessed coordinated processions of Eyo masquerades gliding through the square, accompanied by chants, drum beats, and choreographed movements.

Families, tourists, and photographers captured the vibrant scenes as performers showcased costumes, symbolism, and rituals associated with ancestral reverence.

The ceremonial restrictions guiding conduct at the venue — including dress guidelines and behavioural etiquette — further highlighted the festival’s sacred cultural character.

The Tinubu arrives Eyo festival venue in Lagos moment also sparked conversations within the cultural community about the importance of ensuring continuity through documentation, research, and policy backing.

Heritage advocates called for structured festival financing, institutional partnerships, and youth participation to guarantee knowledge transfer and protect indigenous practices from erosion.

In his brief interaction with dignitaries and cultural stakeholders at the square, President Tinubu was said to have acknowledged the festival’s historical significance to Lagos identity and expressed support for efforts that promote national unity through culture.

Government officials also reiterated commitments to deepen collaboration with custodians of Yoruba heritage, stressing that festivals serve as cultural diplomacy tools capable of strengthening social cohesion.

Residents interviewed at the venue described the day as memorable, noting that the return of the Eyo Festival after several years rekindled civic pride and community belonging.

For others, the presence of the President at the celebration was a defining highlight that elevated the profile of the event domestically and internationally.

As the 2025 edition of the festival drew to a close, cultural commentators maintained that the renewed spotlight on the ceremony provided a strategic opportunity for Lagos to scale up structured tourism promotion, heritage education, and stakeholder engagement.

The sight of the President joining residents at Tafawa Balewa Square — as the Tinubu arrives Eyo festival venue in Lagos theme resonated through the gathering — symbolised a unifying moment that blended governance, tradition, and cultural renaissance in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
