Six killed as severe snow, freezing temperatures paralyse large parts of europe

At least six people have lost their lives as severe winter weather continues to batter large parts of Europe, bringing snowstorms, ice, and dangerously freezing temperatures.

Authorities confirmed multiple fatalities linked to road accidents and falling trees as icy conditions made travel treacherous across several countries on Tuesday.

In southwestern France, officials reported that three people died and more than a dozen others were injured in separate traffic accidents caused by black ice.

Two additional fatalities were recorded in the wider Paris region, where snow-covered roads and reduced visibility contributed to a series of collisions.

Emergency services across France were placed on high alert as snow blanketed major cities and rural areas, disrupting transport networks nationwide.

Heavy snowfall forced the closure of six airports in northern and western France, grounding hundreds of flights and leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, a woman died in the capital, Sarajevo, after a snow-laden tree branch collapsed and struck her during severe weather conditions.

Meteorological agencies warned residents to remain indoors as snow continued to accumulate and temperatures remained below seasonal averages.

Across the Netherlands, the winter storm caused widespread disruption at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled throughout the day.

Airport staff worked continuously to clear runways and de-ice aircraft, but operations remained severely limited due to persistent snowfall.

Rail passengers in the Netherlands also faced chaos after domestic train services were suspended early Tuesday following a technical failure compounded by the weather.

International rail services were affected as well, with several high-speed routes to Paris cancelled or running significantly behind schedule.

Germany experienced some of the coldest temperatures this winter, with thermometers plunging below minus ten degrees Celsius in several southern and eastern regions.

Weather forecasters in Germany warned that another powerful winter storm is expected later in the week, bringing fresh snowfall to northern areas.

In the United Kingdom, overnight temperatures dropped to minus 12.5 degrees Celsius in some regions, marking one of the coldest nights of the season.

Snow and ice disrupted road, rail, and air travel across parts of Britain, forcing the closure of hundreds of schools, particularly in northern areas.

Local councils issued weather warnings, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.

Northern Italy also felt the impact of the cold snap, with temperatures falling below freezing across lowland areas.

Snow was forecast to reach medium and lower altitudes in regions including Emilia-Romagna, Marche, and Tuscany, increasing travel risks.

Meanwhile, central and southern parts of Italy experienced strong winds and heavy rainfall rather than snow, creating a different set of hazards.

In Rome, days of relentless rain caused the Tiber River to swell, raising concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas.

City authorities restricted access to public parks and high-risk zones after several large trees collapsed due to saturated soil and strong winds.

The severe weather dampened public events, including religious gatherings, as residents sought shelter from rain and falling debris.

Across the Balkan region, a combination of snow, rain, and strong winds caused rivers to rise and triggered power and water supply disruptions.

In Serbia, local governments introduced emergency measures in western regions as hazardous conditions worsened ahead of holiday travel.

Drivers heading toward ski resorts were warned to exercise extreme caution, with authorities advising against non-essential journeys.

Croatia and Montenegro faced additional challenges as stormy seas and powerful winds battered coastal areas along the Adriatic.

Ports reported delays while maritime authorities urged smaller vessels to remain docked until conditions improved.

Meteorologists warned that the current cold snap could persist, with fluctuating temperatures increasing the risk of ice formation.

Emergency services across Europe remain on standby as weather systems continue to shift, threatening further snowfall and flooding.

Experts have linked increasingly erratic winter weather patterns to broader climate instability affecting seasonal predictability.

Authorities urged residents to follow official weather updates and heed safety advice as conditions remain dangerous in many areas.

As Europe grapples with the ongoing freeze, transport operators and emergency responders face mounting pressure to restore normal services.

Officials warned that additional casualties could occur if extreme conditions persist and safety measures are ignored.
