Signatious Hotel sealed as Lagos police probe young man’s death

The Lagos Police Command has intensified its investigation into the sudden and controversial death of 29-year-old Mattias Airenekhueme, sealing off Signatious Hotel in the Ajao Estate area as part of ongoing inquiries.

Signatious Hotel

The decision to shut down the hospitality facility followed mounting questions surrounding the circumstances that led to the young man’s death during a poolside event.

Authorities confirmed that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti have taken over the case.

According to information gathered from police sources, the hotel was temporarily closed to preserve evidence and prevent interference while forensic and investigative procedures continue.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 31, when Mattias reportedly attended a pool party hosted at the hotel.

Family members disclosed that he had gone there primarily to sell tickets and generate income, not merely to socialise. What was meant to be a business opportunity, however, ended in tragedy.

A senior security source revealed that four individuals are currently in custody in connection with the case.

Among them is the organiser of the event, whose arrest reportedly followed preliminary findings gathered by investigators.

The Lagos Police stated that the arrests were necessary to clarify inconsistencies in witness accounts and establish a clear timeline of events.

Mattias’ father, Henry Airenekhueme, recounted the distressing sequence that unfolded that evening.

He said he received an urgent call from one of his older sons informing him that Mattias had been rushed to the Isolo General Hospital and that his presence was urgently required. Alarmed, he immediately made his way to the hospital.

On arrival, Henry said he encountered a devastating scene. Instead of meeting doctors attending to his son, he found Mattias’ lifeless body still inside the vehicle that transported him to the hospital. The sight, he said, deepened his grief and raised troubling questions.

According to the father, one of Mattias’ friends who accompanied him to the hospital offered an explanation of what happened.

The friend allegedly stated that he, Mattias, and a lady had been sitting together at the poolside. He reportedly stepped away briefly for about five minutes. Upon returning, he noticed Mattias was no longer at the spot.

When he attempted to locate him, the lady reportedly mentioned that Mattias had left. However, his mobile phone was still charging where they had been seated.

This detail reportedly caused concern, prompting a search around the premises. It was during that search that Mattias’ body was discovered in the swimming pool.

While initial assumptions pointed toward possible drowning, the deceased’s father has publicly questioned that narrative.

He cited certain physical observations he found unusual, suggesting that the matter requires deeper forensic scrutiny. He expressed doubts that the situation was as straightforward as it initially appeared.

The Lagos Police have since ordered a full autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

Officials familiar with the investigation noted that forensic experts are carefully examining all medical and physical evidence before drawing conclusions. The police emphasized that no possibility has been ruled out at this stage.

Community members in Ajao Estate have reacted with shock to the development.

Some residents described the hotel as a popular venue for social gatherings and expressed concern about safety standards at recreational facilities.

Others have called for stricter monitoring of event organisers and better emergency response systems at hotels hosting large parties.

Security analysts say the sealing of the hotel demonstrates that the Lagos Police are treating the matter with seriousness.

By restricting access to the premises, investigators can reconstruct movements within the facility, review surveillance footage, and interview staff without disruption.

Authorities are also believed to be examining guest records and communication logs to establish who was present at the time of the incident.

Family members of the deceased have appealed for transparency and justice.

Henry Airenekhueme stated that the family will await the autopsy results before making further comments but insisted that every question must be answered.

He urged the authorities to ensure that the truth is uncovered without bias or delay.

Legal observers note that cases involving deaths at social events often require careful handling, as conflicting testimonies can complicate investigations.

The role of event organisers, facility management, and attendees typically comes under scrutiny.

In this case, the detention of four suspects indicates that investigators are piecing together different accounts to determine responsibility.

As the investigation progresses, the Lagos Police have assured the public that findings will be made known once the forensic process is completed.

They reiterated their commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that any individual found culpable will face the full weight of the law.

For now, Signatious Hotel remains sealed, its once-busy premises quiet as detectives continue their work.

The outcome of the autopsy and subsequent investigations will likely determine the next legal steps in a case that has drawn widespread attention and raised important questions about safety, accountability, and truth.
