The RAF Fairford bomb plot investigation has taken a new turn after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the suspected incident “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor”, without providing evidence to support the claim.
Five British nationals from London were arrested after three suspicious vans were reported near RAF Fairford in Whelford, Gloucestershire, in the early hours of Sunday.
The arrests triggered a major counter-terrorism operation, with residents evacuated, the village placed under lockdown and bomb disposal teams deployed to examine the vehicles.
However, UK counter-terrorism police later released all five suspects on bail, saying the investigation remained active and that the men were subject to stringent conditions.
RAF Fairford Suspects Released On Bail
The RAF Fairford suspects were initially detained on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism after police responded to reports involving three vehicles near the military base.
The security operation resulted in residents being evacuated from the surrounding area for about 36 hours as specialist teams examined the suspicious vehicles.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of UK counter-terrorism policing, said the release of the five men did not mean investigators had ended their inquiry.
“To be very clear, this does not mean the investigation is over,” Taylor said, adding that the suspects remained under investigation and were subject to “stringent conditions”.
Police said they were examining multiple possible lines of inquiry, including whether individuals could have been acting on behalf of a foreign state.
No Explosive Material Found
The development became more significant after it emerged that no explosive material had ultimately been found in the vans.
Initial examinations had led police to suspect that the vehicles contained explosive materials and investigators assessed whether they could have constituted viable improvised explosive devices.
The absence of explosive material has added to questions surrounding the circumstances of the arrests and the level of threat posed by the suspects.
According to the Guardian, sources indicated that the release on bail suggested detectives did not believe the men were on the verge of carrying out a mass-casualty attack by detonating a bomb close to the base.

Marco Rubio Foreign Actor Claim
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio foreign actor claims have brought an international dimension to the investigation.
Rubio said in an interview with Fox News that the incident was a “very serious situation” and that it “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor”.
However, Rubio did not provide evidence publicly to substantiate the claim.
He also expressed concern about the decision to release the five suspects on bail, saying many people were “disturbed that some of these people [being investigated] have been released on bail”.
President Trump similarly questioned the decision, telling reporters at the White House that he would not have released the suspects.
“We know everything about them. We would not have released them,” Trump said.
Asked whether the case was connected to Iran, Trump replied: “It might.”
He declined to provide further details, saying he knew the answer but preferred not to discuss it publicly.
Iran RAF Fairford Link Remains Unproven
The possibility of an Iran RAF Fairford link has emerged because of previous threats involving the military base.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in July that RAF Fairford was a legitimate target, while Iran’s embassy in London has denied involvement in the latest incident.
UK counter-terrorism police have also said they are considering the possibility that the incident could involve proxies or individuals working knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state.
Taylor said investigators were “keeping an open mind” and considering the incident “from every possible angle”.
He specifically said police were examining whether the activity could have been committed by “proxies, or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state”.
That statement does not establish that a foreign government was responsible, and investigators have not publicly identified any foreign actor as being behind the incident.
Conflicting Accounts Over RAF Fairford Investigation
The UK terrorism investigation has also generated questions about what British and US authorities knew before the arrests.
Trump suggested that US authorities knew about the suspects, while British sources indicated that the specific activities of the five men were not known in advance.
Local representatives have also questioned the differing accounts surrounding the incident.
Tristan Wilkinson, a councillor representing the area, questioned how the incident could simultaneously have involved a tip from a member of the public and an apparent level of intelligence awareness.
“It seems insane that this appears to have been a tipoff from a member of the public, and the security services are claiming that there was a level of intelligence involved as well,” Wilkinson said.
“I don’t see how those two things can both come through at the same time.”
Investigation Continues
Despite the release of the five suspects, counter-terrorism police have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing.
The men are subject to bail conditions while investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the three vans and the events near RAF Fairford.
