Police Welfare Scheme: Sokoto Command supports fallen officers’ families

Sokoto Police Command disburses ₦21.3m under the Police Welfare Scheme to support families of fallen and injured officers, honoring their sacrifice.

The Sokoto Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to officer welfare through the Police Welfare Scheme, distributing ₦21.3 million to 30 families of police officers who either died in active service or sustained serious injuries while performing their duties.

The initiative reflects the Inspector-General of Police’s ongoing effort to honor the sacrifices of officers who risk their lives daily to safeguard citizens.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony in Sokoto, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Musa, praised the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his dedication to improving the welfare of officers and their dependents.

He described the Police Welfare Scheme as a compassionate and reform-driven policy that ensures no officer’s family is left behind after tragedy.

According to CP Musa, the ₦21.3 million disbursed under the Police Welfare Scheme is not just financial relief but a message of gratitude from the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the initiative symbolizes the Force’s commitment to supporting families of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to their nation.

“The Inspector-General has prioritized the welfare of every officer and their family. His leadership has transformed the Police Welfare Scheme into a sustainable support system that gives hope and stability to those left behind,” Musa said.

The commissioner lauded IGP Egbetokun’s empathy and leadership style, noting that the welfare reforms have inspired confidence among serving officers.

He added that by focusing on the welfare of both active and retired officers, the IGP has rekindled trust within the police community, fostering a renewed sense of loyalty and dedication.

He continued, “These officers served Nigeria selflessly, and their courage will never be forgotten. Through the Police Welfare Scheme, their families are assured that their loved ones’ service and sacrifice are valued.”

CP Musa also used the event to advise beneficiaries on the responsible use of the funds.

He urged them to invest in ventures that would secure their future, such as education, small-scale enterprises, or long-term savings.

He stressed that the goal of the Police Welfare Scheme is not only to provide immediate relief but also to empower families to build sustainable livelihoods.

He said, “The funds you receive today should serve as a foundation for rebuilding your lives. Use them wisely and productively. Let the memory of your loved ones inspire you to plan for a better tomorrow.”

One of the beneficiaries, Abdulrahaman Bello, son of a late officer, expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the families.

He thanked the Inspector-General and the Sokoto Police Command for remembering them and providing timely assistance. Bello said the initiative has restored hope to many who had been struggling since the loss of their loved ones.

“This support has given our families a new beginning,” Bello remarked.

“We are truly grateful for the compassion shown through the Police Welfare Scheme. It shows that the Nigeria Police Force values its officers even after they are gone.”

Other family members present at the event shared similar sentiments, describing the initiative as both emotional and encouraging. Many said they had feared being forgotten, but the recent welfare intervention proved that the police leadership genuinely cares about their well-being.

Security experts and community leaders who witnessed the ceremony also commended the IGP’s welfare-driven leadership.

They noted that improved officer welfare directly enhances morale, discipline, and performance, contributing to better policing and national security.

According to them, the Police Welfare Scheme is a strategic investment in the human capital of the Nigeria Police Force, ensuring that officers remain motivated to serve despite the inherent dangers of their profession.

They emphasized that when officers are confident that their families will be supported if anything happens to them, they perform their duties with greater courage and dedication.

Beyond financial support, CP Musa explained that the IGP’s welfare policies extend to other benefits such as health insurance, housing initiatives, and educational scholarships for children of deceased officers.

These measures, he said, demonstrate a holistic approach to police welfare reform and institutional compassion.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Sokoto Command to continue implementing these welfare initiatives transparently and effectively, ensuring that beneficiaries receive their full entitlements without delay or bias.

He also reassured serving officers that their welfare remains a top priority under the current police administration.

The commissioner concluded by urging the public to appreciate and support the Nigeria Police Force, reminding citizens that officers continually risk their lives to maintain peace, security, and order across the country.

“Our officers make sacrifices every day to protect Nigeria. Through the Police Welfare Scheme, we are showing that the institution stands firmly with them and their families—both in life and after service,” he said.

As the event drew to a close, emotions ran high among attendees. Many families expressed tears of gratitude, while officers pledged to continue serving with honor, knowing that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

The Police Welfare Scheme has thus become a symbol of compassion, reform, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

It continues to bridge the emotional and financial gap between service and remembrance, ensuring that no officer’s sacrifice goes unnoticed and no family is left behind.

Through the consistent implementation of the Police Welfare Scheme, the Force has not only strengthened its internal unity but also restored public trust in the institution’s humanity and sense of justice.
