The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a decisive step in Nigeria’s opposition politics by formally recognising a new National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a move that is expected to significantly influence the party’s internal balance of power.

The decision, which followed an update on INEC’s official portal, confirms the acceptance of a leadership bloc aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

This development signals a new phase in the ongoing PDP leadership crisis, as competing interests within the party continue to jostle for control ahead of future political contests.

At the centre of the reshaped leadership is Abdulrahman Mohammed, who has been listed as the National Chairman.

He is joined by Samuel Anyanwu, recognised as National Secretary, alongside other key officials forming the newly acknowledged executive structure.

Their emergence underscores a broader effort to stabilise the PDP leadership crisis through consensus and institutional backing.

The new leadership lineup was produced during the PDP’s National Convention held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The convention, which took place on Sunday night, followed the dissolution of the party’s National Caretaker Committee.

Delegates and stakeholders reportedly adopted a consensus approach to avoid further fragmentation, a strategy widely interpreted as a response to the deepening PDP leadership crisis.

Beyond the chairman and secretary positions, the reconstituted NWC reflects a carefully balanced structure designed to accommodate various geopolitical interests.

Aaron Chukwuemeka was named Deputy National Chairman (South), while Yusufu Akirikwen assumed the role of Deputy National Chairman (North).

This dual arrangement is seen as an attempt to maintain regional inclusiveness amid the PDP leadership crisis.

Other strategic positions were also filled to strengthen the party’s administrative framework.

Kolawale Olabisi emerged as Deputy National Secretary, while Odeyemi Oladiran and Lado Marke took up the roles of National Treasurer and Deputy National Treasurer respectively.

Financial oversight positions went to Eyim Henry as National Financial Secretary and Grema Kyari as his deputy.

In the organisational structure, Umar Bature was appointed National Organising Secretary, supported by Efere Augustine.

Communication responsibilities were assigned to Jungudo Mohammed as National Publicity Secretary, with Egwu Chidiebere serving as deputy.

These appointments are expected to play critical roles in managing the party’s messaging amid the PDP leadership crisis.

Legal and compliance functions were not left out, with Kamaldeen Ajibade named National Legal Adviser and Aloysius Uba as deputy.

Similarly, audit responsibilities were assigned to Osuoha Donatus and Adaba Seri Yatu, reinforcing accountability mechanisms within the party.

The inclusion of women and youth leadership also featured prominently. Ogunshe Adedayo emerged as National Women Leader, with Hauwa Shinge as deputy.

Youth representation was secured through the appointments of Ibrahim Aboki and Momoh Bashir as National Youth Leader and deputy respectively, a move aimed at energising the party’s grassroots base despite the lingering PDP leadership crisis.

Political observers note that INEC’s recognition of this faction may have far-reaching implications.

It not only confers a level of institutional legitimacy but could also influence future legal and electoral engagements involving the party.

However, the PDP leadership crisis is unlikely to dissipate immediately, as rival factions may continue to challenge the development through internal and judicial channels.

Ultimately, the emergence of the new NWC represents both an attempt at resolution and a reflection of the PDP leadership crisis.

While the party seeks to reposition itself as a viable opposition force, its ability to maintain unity and coherence will determine how effectively it can navigate the complex terrain of Nigerian politics in the months ahead.
