OYRTMA traffic enforcement arrests impostors extorting motorists, ensuring lawful, fair traffic management across Oyo State for all road users.
The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) traffic enforcement has intensified efforts to protect motorists by apprehending a criminal syndicate impersonating traffic officers.
In collaboration with security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps and Operation Burst, the authority dismantled the group extorting unsuspecting Oyo State motorists.
Speaking to journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, OYRTMA Executive Chairman, Maj. Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), revealed that the agency had received numerous complaints from residents and motorists about criminals posing as OYRTMA traffic enforcement officers to demand money illegally.
“For some time, we have received complaints about groups perpetrating mischief under the guise of traffic enforcement.
“A recent incident involved a banker robbed of ₦85,000 by impostors posing as OYRTMA officials. That case is just one example among many,” Maj. Adekoya explained.
He emphasized that OYRTMA traffic enforcement holds exclusive authority for traffic violations in Oyo State.
“While local governments can regulate parking and signage, they cannot apprehend vehicles for traffic offenses. These criminals exploit the gap to extort innocent citizens,” he said.
The operation targeted Egbeda and Lagelu Local Government Areas, recovering 95 illegally seized vehicle number plates, multiple vehicle batteries ranging from 75 to 150 amps, and fake tickets demanding extortion sums up to ₦90,000.

Eight suspects were arrested in Egbeda and handed over to the police at Testing Ground for further investigation.
Maj. Adekoya explained the importance of lawful traffic management in safeguarding motorists.
“Unlike OYRTMA traffic enforcement officers, who follow proper tribunal procedures for alleged violators, impostors demand money on the spot, creating fear and confusion on the roads,” he stated.
Motorists are urged to identify genuine OYRTMA traffic enforcement officers by their valid ID cards and uniforms.
“We have complaint channels for residents to report suspicious activities directly. If in doubt, contact our office immediately to avoid being scammed,” Maj. Adekoya added.
The chairman reiterated OYRTMA traffic enforcement’s commitment to a fair and transparent traffic system.
“Our goal is to create a road environment free from harassment, extortion, and intimidation. Through partnerships with security agencies, we are restoring public confidence in traffic enforcement,” he said.
For motorists, the key takeaways for dealing with OYRTMA traffic enforcement include:
1. Official Identification – Officers carry ID cards and wear proper uniforms.
2. Tribunal Process – All alleged traffic violations undergo due judicial review.
3. Reporting Suspicious Behavior – Citizens can report impostors directly.
4. Do Not Pay On the Spot – Verify the authenticity of any officer before payment.
With the apprehension of this syndicate, OYRTMA traffic enforcement demonstrates its commitment to upholding lawful traffic management in Oyo State.
Maj. Adekoya emphasized, “This is a clear warning to traffic impostors: unlawful extortion on our roads will not be tolerated.”
OYRTMA’s proactive approach, combining public education and strategic collaboration with security agencies, aims to ensure that motorists feel safe and protected.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly, reinforcing a traffic system built on legality, fairness, and public trust.
