The Ogun Gateway International Airport has officially commenced commercial operations, marking a new chapter in Nigeria’s aviation growth and regional connectivity.
Despite the early morning rainfall, the state-of-the-art facility in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, welcomed its first commercial flight on Tuesday — a ValueJet aircraft en route to Abuja — signaling the beginning of scheduled passenger services from the newly built airport.
Ogun Gateway International Airport Takes Off
The inaugural flight, aired live, saw passengers lining up for check-in and boarding at the gleaming new terminal of the Ogun Gateway International Airport.
The launch represents not only a logistical milestone but also a long-awaited vision of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to make Ogun a major hub for air travel and investment in Southwest Nigeria.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, ValueJet will operate regular passenger flights from the airport to the nation’s capital, Abuja, every Tuesday and Thursday.
The outbound flight from Ogun departs at 3 p.m. and lands in Abuja at 4:15 p.m., while the return flight leaves Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by 4 p.m. and arrives back in Ogun at 5:15 p.m.
Governor Abiodun Reaffirms Commitment to Aviation Excellence
Speaking on the development, Governor Dapo Abiodun described the first commercial flight as “a historic and symbolic leap forward for Ogun State.”
He emphasized that the government remains fully committed to maintaining the highest aviation standards in safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
“We are delighted to witness the official take-off of passenger flights from the Ogun Gateway International Airport,” Abiodun said.
“This project aligns with our economic transformation agenda to attract investment, create jobs, and position Ogun as the next logistics and business destination in Nigeria.”
Abiodun disclosed that he had met with the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, in Abeokuta, to review ongoing aviation reforms and discuss the strategic role the new airport will play in the state’s industrial and economic ecosystem.
NCAA Approval and International Recognition
The commencement of operations at the Ogun Gateway International Airport follows the issuance of Aerodrome Operational Permits by the NCAA in August 2025.
The certification, which came after extensive technical inspections and audits, signified the airport’s readiness to begin passenger and cargo services.
Governor Abiodun hailed the NCAA’s decision as an “endorsement of excellence,” noting that it was the first time a newly constructed airport in Nigeria had received full regulatory certification under the country’s updated aviation standards.
The NCAA praised the facility as a “model for future aviation infrastructure,” citing its modern architecture, robust safety systems, and efficient design.
The airport has been assigned an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) Category 6 rating, allowing it to accommodate medium-sized commercial jets and operate daytime flights from sunrise to sunset.
Economic and Strategic Impact for Ogun State
Analysts say the operationalization of the Ogun Gateway International Airport will bring immense socio-economic benefits to the state and the region.
The airport’s proximity to Lagos and major industrial corridors positions it as a key driver of investment in manufacturing, real estate, logistics, and tourism.
The project also aims to decongest the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and offer an alternative gateway for both domestic and regional air travelers.
Businesses operating within Ogun’s growing industrial clusters, such as Agbara and Sagamu, are expected to benefit significantly from reduced transportation time and cost efficiency.
According to Governor Abiodun, “the airport will not only serve as an aviation facility but as an anchor for a new aerotropolis — a commercial ecosystem built around air connectivity.”
He added that the state was in discussions with private investors and international carriers to expand operations and develop complementary infrastructure such as cargo terminals, maintenance hangars, and hospitality facilities.
Infrastructure Development and Future Plans
The Ogun State government has also revealed plans to integrate the Ogun Gateway International Airport into a larger multimodal transport network connecting expressways, rail lines, and industrial zones.
This integration is expected to strengthen trade logistics and support export-oriented industries within the state.
Meanwhile, the state’s aviation expansion has attracted attention from federal authorities.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reportedly expressed support for Ogun’s vision of becoming a major aviation hub, commending the quality of infrastructure and regulatory compliance.
