Nigerian Army clarifies circumstances surrounding Corporal Ude Jude’s death, dismisses foul play claims, explains injury, treatment, and investigation process.
The Nigerian Army has firmly rejected widespread allegations suggesting internal wrongdoing in the circumstances surrounding the death of Corporal Ude Jude, stating that such claims are inaccurate, misleading, and capable of distorting public perception of the incident.
The institution explained that preliminary findings point to an off-duty civilian confrontation rather than any internal military misconduct or sabotage.
According to an official clarification issued by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Captain Abayomi Adisa, the service also corrected misinformation circulating in parts of the media which wrongly referred to the deceased soldier as a Lieutenant.
He confirmed that Corporal Ude Jude was a trained and serving soldier who enlisted in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake and hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
At the time of the incident, he was deployed under operational duty at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua, Katsina State.
The incident in question reportedly occurred on February 16, 2026, when the soldier briefly left his assigned duty location to purchase personal necessities.
During this period, he was allegedly involved in a violent confrontation outside the military perimeter.
Investigators believe the encounter escalated into a physical altercation with a civilian arising from a personal disagreement.
The assailants reportedly fled the scene afterward, while residents in the area assisted the injured soldier to a nearby medical facility where he first received attention.
According to further clarification from the Nigerian Army, the wounded soldier initially informed responders that he had been attacked, prompting immediate medical attention and documentation of his condition.
Medical personnel at the receiving facility provided emergency stabilization before referring him for more advanced care due to the severity of his injuries, which included stab wounds and related trauma.

He was subsequently transferred to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he underwent sustained medical treatment over several weeks.
During this period, he remained under close observation by military medical personnel who worked continuously to stabilize his condition.
Authorities noted that all necessary clinical procedures were followed, including regular monitoring, medication, and supportive care aimed at ensuring recovery while investigations into the external attack progressed.
After showing signs of gradual improvement, the soldier was discharged on March 24 and allowed to return to his residence within the barracks under standard recovery arrangements.
However, he was later discovered unconscious outside his accommodation. He was immediately rushed back to the medical facility, where despite emergency intervention efforts, he was confirmed dead on arrival.
The Nigerian Army stated that this development was deeply unfortunate but not connected to any form of internal negligence or abandonment, as all standard welfare and medical protocols had been observed.
Military authorities further explained that senior officers, including the Garrison Commander, ensured that full welfare support was provided throughout the period of treatment and after his death.
This included mortuary arrangements, administrative coordination, and logistical assistance in line with established military welfare procedures.
The Army also noted that coordination with the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu ensured proper institutional support, particularly during burial arrangements, and that all entitlements and honours due to the deceased were fully accorded to his family.
Officials emphasized that the delay in issuing a comprehensive public statement was necessary to allow for proper internal verification and coordination between relevant military formations.
According to them, such procedural caution was essential to avoid the release of incomplete or inaccurate information that could mislead the public or compromise ongoing assessments of the incident.
The Nigerian Army also reiterated that there is currently no evidence suggesting internal sabotage, organized attack within the barracks, or rivalry among personnel linked to the incident.
It urged members of the public to disregard speculative narratives and unverified claims circulating on social media and some news platforms, stressing that such misinformation could undermine confidence in military institutions.
Authorities further confirmed that efforts are still ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the external attack that led to the fatal injuries.
They assured that the investigation is being pursued diligently and that justice will be served in accordance with the law once all responsible parties are identified and apprehended.
In its final remarks, the Nigerian Army appealed to citizens, media organizations, and digital platforms to rely strictly on verified official communications when reporting matters involving national security personnel.
It warned that the spread of unverified information not only distorts public understanding but also interferes with ongoing investigative processes and institutional accountability.
