DHQ clarifies scope of Nigeria–U.S. military cooperation after viral reports

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly addressed growing public concerns over reports suggesting that United States combat troops have been deployed within Nigeria to fight terrorism, clarifying that no such operation exists outside established diplomatic and military frameworks.

The clarification follows a wave of viral media reports and social media speculation claiming that American soldiers were actively operating on Nigerian soil in combat roles.

According to the military high command, these claims are misleading and risk creating unnecessary public anxiety about Nigeria’s sovereignty and national security arrangements.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, emphasized that all engagements between Nigeria and the United States are conducted with full respect for Nigeria’s territorial integrity and constitutional authority.

He explained that Nigeria’s defence relationship with the United States is neither new nor covert but is part of a long-standing, well-regulated security partnership.

The DHQ noted that Nigeria–U.S. military cooperation is rooted in mutual respect, shared security interests and carefully defined agreements that prioritize Nigeria’s leadership and decision-making authority.

The partnership, the military said, does not involve foreign troops independently carrying out combat operations within the country.

According to the statement, cooperation between both countries focuses primarily on capacity development rather than battlefield deployment.

This includes professional military education, intelligence exchange, logistics support, technical assistance and strategic consultations aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to respond to security threats.

The military high command stressed that terrorism, insurgency and transnational crimes pose complex challenges that require collaboration among responsible international partners.

However, it maintained that such collaboration does not translate into the erosion of national sovereignty.

“All engagements are conducted in full respect of Nigeria’s sovereignty and in line with existing bilateral frameworks,” the DHQ stated, reaffirming that Nigeria remains firmly in control of all security operations conducted within its borders.

As part of this ongoing partnership, the DHQ disclosed that a recent two-day high-level Working Group meeting was held at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the United States government and top Nigerian security officials to review existing areas of collaboration and identify ways to improve effectiveness.

The meeting, according to the military, followed earlier engagements held in the United States and reflected a mature, trust-based relationship between both nations.

Officials described the dialogue as practical and outcome-driven, with discussions centered on strengthening coordination rather than expanding foreign military presence.

During the engagements, participants examined proposals designed to enhance accountability in joint security initiatives, improve intelligence-sharing mechanisms and refine strategies for countering violent extremist threats.

Particular attention was given to ensuring that all counterterrorism efforts prioritize civilian protection and community safety.

The DHQ explained that these proposals are currently undergoing thorough review by relevant Nigerian authorities.

No decision, it said, will be taken without careful consideration of national interest, legal frameworks and long-term security implications.

Reiterating its position, the military high command stated that Nigeria–U.S. military cooperation is guided strictly by clearly defined objectives and measurable outcomes.

The DHQ emphasized that Nigeria does not outsource its security responsibilities and remains fully responsible for all military actions carried out within its territory.

The military also addressed public concerns over transparency, assuring citizens that all defence partnerships entered into by Nigeria are policy-driven and subject to civilian oversight.

According to the DHQ, such partnerships align with constitutional provisions and Nigeria’s broader national security strategy.

Security analysts note that Nigeria has, over the years, collaborated with multiple international partners to address terrorism, banditry and other transnational threats.

These partnerships, they argue, are increasingly important in a global security environment where threats often cross borders and require shared intelligence and expertise.

Nevertheless, the DHQ acknowledged the importance of public trust and accurate information, especially in an era of rapid digital communication.

It warned that misinformation surrounding military affairs could undermine national unity and distract from ongoing efforts to improve security across the country.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria, the statement said, remain committed to defending the nation’s territorial integrity and protecting citizens from threats.

While working with credible international partners, the military pledged that it would never compromise Nigeria’s independence or decision-making authority.

The DHQ further emphasized that Nigeria–U.S. military cooperation should be understood as a support framework designed to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture rather than replace it.

The military stressed that Nigerian troops remain at the forefront of all operations, supported by training, intelligence and logistical assistance where necessary.

In recent years, Nigeria has intensified efforts to reform and modernize its armed forces, focusing on professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.

According to the DHQ, international partnerships play a role in supporting these reforms but are carefully structured to reflect Nigeria’s unique security realities.

The military concluded by urging Nigerians to rely on official sources for information regarding national defence matters and to avoid spreading unverified claims that could fuel misunderstanding or fear.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity while engaging trusted partners in ways that enhance national security without undermining sovereignty,” the statement concluded.
