NGX market surges by ₦598bn as investor confidence returns

Nigeria’s equities market recorded a strong rebound on Wednesday as renewed investor confidence pushed total market capitalisation higher, reinforcing optimism about the short-term outlook of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

The market added ₦598 billion in a single trading session, reflecting increased bullish sentiment despite a noticeable slowdown in overall trading volume.

At the close of trading, total market capitalisation stood at ₦106.78 trillion, representing a 0.56 per cent increase from the previous session.

The development marked another positive signal for the equities market, which has shown resilience in recent weeks amid macroeconomic adjustments, interest rate expectations, and evolving corporate earnings projections.

Although market activity moderated in terms of volume and turnover, analysts noted that the quality of participation improved, with investors becoming more selective and positioning themselves in stocks perceived to offer stability and long-term value.

NGX Market Surge Driven by Selective Buying and Bargain Hunting

Market data showed that a total of 752.4 million shares were traded across 55,739 deals, valued at ₦29.62 billion.

Compared with the previous trading day, volume declined by 33 per cent while turnover dropped by 12 per cent.

However, the number of deals rose by 13 per cent, a trend analysts say points to continued participation by retail and institutional investors alike.

According to market watchers, the NGX market surge was largely powered by bargain hunting in undervalued stocks and renewed interest in companies with strong fundamentals.

Investors appeared to be targeting equities with consistent earnings prospects, sound balance sheets, and defensive positioning against inflationary pressures.

Trading activity cut across 131 listed equities, underscoring broad market participation. Of these, 47 stocks closed in positive territory, while 28 recorded losses, reflecting a moderately balanced but clearly bullish session.

Academy Press led the gainers’ chart, advancing by the maximum daily limit of 10 per cent to close at ₦8.25 per share.

NCR Nigeria followed closely with a 9.98 per cent appreciation, while Tripple Gee and Company rose by 9.95 per cent.

Tantalizers also recorded a strong showing, gaining 9.93 per cent during the session.
On the flip side, May and Baker Nigeria topped the losers’ table after shedding 9.79 per cent to close at ₦28.55 per share.

Coronation Insurance declined by 6.76 per cent, Livestock Feeds dropped 6.67 per cent, and PZ Cussons lost 6.52 per cent, reflecting profit-taking and sector-specific pressures.

Heavyweights and Volume Leaders Shape Market Direction

Access Holdings emerged as the most actively traded stock by volume, with 53.41 million shares exchanged, valued at ₦1.24 billion.

Lasaco Assurance followed with 39 million shares worth ₦100.2 million, while Veritas Kapital Assurance and Tantalizers recorded 32.79 million and 30.13 million shares, respectively.

In terms of value, Aradel Holdings dominated the session, posting ₦8.99 billion from 11.33 million shares traded.

Seplat Energy followed with ₦4.02 billion in traded value, while MTN Nigeria recorded ₦1.64 billion. Zenith Bank and Access Holdings rounded out the top five by value, highlighting sustained interest in large-cap and fundamentally strong stocks.

Market operators observed that the NGX market surge was supported by buying interest in both mid-cap and blue-chip stocks, indicating a broad-based recovery rather than a rally driven by a narrow segment of the market.

Sector Performance Reflects Cautious Optimism

Consumer-facing stocks featured prominently among the session’s top performers, suggesting growing confidence in companies positioned to benefit from improving demand conditions.

Academy Press, Tripple Gee, and Tantalizers were among the beneficiaries of this renewed appetite, reflecting investor expectations of steady revenue flows and operational recovery.

Meanwhile, performance across the financial and insurance sectors was mixed. While banking heavyweights attracted value-driven trades, some insurance and pharmaceutical stocks lagged, highlighting lingering concerns over sector-specific fundamentals and cost pressures.

Analysts noted that the divergence in sector performance is consistent with a market transitioning from broad speculative buying to more disciplined, fundamentals-driven investing.

Market analysts described Wednesday’s rally as a healthy consolidation phase rather than a speculative spike.

According to them, the NGX market surge reflects cautious optimism, with investors balancing risk management against the search for attractive returns.

“The decline in volume alongside a rise in market capitalisation suggests that investors are being more deliberate,” an equities analyst said.

“There is clear interest in stocks with strong earnings visibility, while weaker names are facing sell pressure.”

Analysts added that expectations around corporate earnings releases, monetary policy direction, and macroeconomic stability will continue to shape market sentiment in the near term.

Any positive signals in these areas could further strengthen investor confidence and support sustained gains on the exchange.

Recent Momentum Supports Positive Sentiment

The latest session builds on earlier gains recorded earlier in the week. On Tuesday, the Nigerian Exchange extended its bullish run, adding ₦1.66 trillion to market capitalisation on the back of sustained buying interest in key stocks.

The back-to-back gains have reinforced the view that investors are gradually returning to the market after periods of volatility.

Market participants believe that while short-term fluctuations are inevitable, the underlying trend remains cautiously positive, provided economic reforms and corporate performance continue to align with investor expectations.

Outlook: Selectivity to Define the Next Phase

As trading continues, analysts expect selectivity to remain the dominant theme on the NGX. Investors are likely to focus on stocks with clear growth narratives, resilient earnings, and strong governance structures.

The NGX market surge, while encouraging, also serves as a reminder that market recoveries are often uneven.

For investors, the emphasis remains on informed decision-making, portfolio diversification, and long-term value creation as Nigeria’s equities market navigates a complex economic environment.

For now, the return of bullish sentiment offers a measure of reassurance to market participants, signalling that confidence—though cautious—is steadily finding its way back to the Nigerian bourse.
