New tenant linked to abduction of siblings in Ebonyi

Residents of Nwezenyi community in Igbeagu, within Izzi Local Government Area in Ebonyi State are still grappling with disbelief after a disturbing abduction incident involving three young siblings.

The children—identified as Favour, Obinna and Kamso Okeoha—were reportedly taken from their home by a woman who had only just moved into their compound.

The unsettling development has drawn the attention of the Ebonyi State Police Command, which has confirmed that a formal investigation is underway.

Police authorities say efforts are ongoing to trace the suspect and ensure the safe return of the children.

According to multiple residents who spoke anonymously, the female suspect rented an apartment in the compound just two days before the incident.

She reportedly paid for the room on a Thursday and moved in fully on Friday. By Saturday, the abduction had already occurred.

Neighbours described her as calm and approachable during her brief stay.

One resident recalled that she seemed eager to integrate into the environment, even repainting her apartment shortly after moving in.

In what many now consider a calculated move to build trust, she allegedly wrote the phrase “One Love” boldly on the wall of her room.

“At the time, we thought she was just trying to be friendly and positive,” one neighbour explained.

“Nobody suspected anything unusual.”

The sudden disappearance of the children, however, has transformed what once appeared to be a harmless gesture into something far more troubling.

Sources within the community disclosed that the siblings were taken on Saturday, February 28, while their parents were not at home.

Details surrounding exactly how the abduction was carried out remain unclear, but residents believe the suspect may have taken advantage of the temporary absence of the children’s guardians.

The compound, described as relatively peaceful before the event, has since become a focal point of concern.

Parents in the area are reportedly keeping closer watch on their children, while discussions about tenant verification and neighborhood vigilance have intensified.

Community leaders have begun informal meetings to explore preventive measures.

Some residents are calling for stricter background checks for new tenants, arguing that the tragic situation exposes serious gaps in local security awareness.

Confirming the incident to journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Joshua Ukandu, assured the public that the matter is receiving urgent attention.

He stated that investigators are actively pursuing leads that could result in the rescue of the children and the arrest of the suspect.

“The command is fully committed to resolving this case,” he said, urging anyone with credible information to come forward.

Authorities have not yet released further identifying details about the suspect, but they emphasized that intelligence gathering and coordination efforts are ongoing.

The police have also appealed for calm, advising residents to avoid spreading unverified rumors that could hinder the investigation.

The abduction has sparked broader conversations across the local government area about community security and collective responsibility.

Beyond the immediate search efforts, the emotional toll on the community is evident.

Many residents say they feel betrayed by the realization that someone who appeared friendly could allegedly commit such an act.

One mother in the compound described the atmosphere as tense and fearful.

“We now look at strangers differently,” she said. “Everyone is worried about their children.”

Local youth groups have volunteered to support surveillance efforts within the area, while religious leaders are organizing prayer sessions for the safe return of the siblings. The sense of unity is strong, but so is the anxiety.

Security experts note that incidents like this highlight the importance of informal neighborhood watch systems, particularly in residential areas where new tenants move in frequently without thorough background checks.

In the wake of the abduction, residents are advocating practical steps to reduce vulnerability.

Suggestions include mandatory identification documentation for new tenants, improved landlord oversight, and closer cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

Community elders have stressed that while the investigation continues, vigilance must not turn into suspicion or hostility toward newcomers.

Instead, they encourage structured systems that balance hospitality with security awareness.

Meanwhile, the parents of the missing children are said to be cooperating fully with authorities as search operations continue.
