Nationwide tinted glass permit enforcement begins October 2, police declare

The Nigeria Police Force begins nationwide Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement from October 2, 2025, warning motorists without valid permits of sanctions.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement will officially commence nationwide on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

The directive, issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, ends the grace period earlier granted to motorists to obtain or renew their permits.

The enforcement is backed by the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 2004, a law enacted to regulate the use of tinted glasses in vehicles.

Over the years, security agencies have linked the misuse of dark-tinted vehicles to criminal activities such as kidnappings, armed robberies, and smuggling.

Authorities insist that while there are legitimate reasons for using tinted glasses—such as medical conditions, security operations, or diplomatic functions—only individuals and organizations with valid police-issued permits will be exempted from sanctions.

IGP Egbetokun explained that stricter enforcement is part of a wider strategy to deter crime and enhance public safety.

He described compliance not only as a legal duty but also as a contribution to national security.

ASP Mohammed Halima, Police Public Relations Officer for Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, issued the directive on behalf of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police. He stated:

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public, particularly residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Niger State, that the full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit will commence nationwide on Thursday, October 2, 2025.”

The statement outlined three key implications:

Driving a vehicle with tinted windows without a valid permit is now an offence.

Routine stop-and-check operations will be conducted by enforcement teams.

Offenders risk vehicle impoundment, fines, and possible prosecution.

Motorists are advised to apply for or revalidate their permits through the official Nigeria Police portal: www.possap.gov.ng. The portal allows applicants to complete forms, upload documents, and monitor the progress of their applications.

Authorities warned against patronizing middlemen who claim to offer shortcuts or “special processing.” Only documents obtained through the official police platform are verifiable and legally valid.

Any motorist caught without a valid permit will face sanctions, which may include:

Impoundment of vehicles until compliance is met.

Monetary fines and penalties.

Legal prosecution in cases of repeated violations.

The police stressed that enforcement officers will act professionally but firmly. Citizens are encouraged to report any misconduct or extortion attempts during the exercise.

The Inspector-General appealed for public cooperation, emphasizing that the directive is designed to safeguard lives, not to inconvenience motorists.

“Compliance with this directive is a collective responsibility toward ensuring public safety and national security,” he said.

Transport unions, medical associations, and motorists’ groups have expressed mixed reactions.

While many welcome the move as a step toward improved security, others worry about delays at checkpoints and possible harassment.

Civil society organizations urged the police to combine firmness with transparency to maintain public trust.

To improve transparency, the police are working to enhance digital verification systems that allow officers to instantly confirm the authenticity of permits.

This measure, according to police authorities, will help reduce corruption and prevent motorists from being harassed with fake demands.

This is not the first attempt at enforcing tinted glass regulations. Past directives were often met with partial compliance, with some motorists exploiting loopholes or presenting forged permits.

By relaunching Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement with a clear online application system and tighter checks, the police hope to close those gaps and restore public confidence.

For accurate updates, citizens are urged to rely only on verified police platforms. Zone 7 Headquarters has made available its official social media link: https://linktr.ee/npfzoneviiabuja?utm_source=linktree_admin_share.

The police reminded the public that any information outside official channels should be treated with caution to avoid falling prey to misinformation.

With the October 2 deadline set for the start of Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement, the Nigeria Police Force is signaling a firm commitment to uphold the law, enhance road security, and deter criminal activities.

Motorists are advised to comply promptly by securing valid permits through the approved portal to avoid sanctions.

The success of the enforcement will depend on both the professionalism of the police and the cooperation of Nigerians who share the responsibility of building a safer society.
