Mob sets suspected motorcycle thief ablaze in Makurdi

A mob in Makurdi killed a suspected motorcycle thief after he allegedly snatched a bike, sparking calls for stronger security and community vigilance.

A suspected motorcycle thief was brutally killed by a mob on Sunday, January 11, 2025, opposite the Prime Power filling station in Makurdi, Benue State.

The incident reportedly followed an alleged motorcycle snatching, which sent shockwaves through the Demekpe community and drew attention to rising insecurity in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect allegedly took a motorcycle from a commercial rider along Ahmadu Commisi Road, prompting an immediate response from nearby residents and fellow motorcycle operators.

The swift reaction highlighted both the dangers faced by commercial riders and the community’s reliance on self-policing in the absence of rapid law enforcement intervention.

The motorcycle owner, Onoja Okendu, disclosed that he had acquired the bike through a hire-purchase arrangement for N2 million in October 2025.

“I was riding from Wadata through the NKST sharp bend toward Modern Market when the young man suddenly stopped me and mounted the bike,” Okendu explained.

“Because it was Sunday, I initially thought he had just left church. I never expected what followed.”

According to Okendu, after moving toward Demekpe Primary School, the suspect asked him to stop, claiming he had forgotten something. Moments later, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and ordered Okendu to run.

“I immediately fled while shouting, ‘Thief! Thief!’,” he said, emphasizing the terror he experienced. The cries reportedly drew the attention of residents and other motorcycle riders, who quickly mobilized to pursue the suspect.

One of the locals involved in the chase, who identified himself as Tony, narrated the sequence of events.

“After the thief snatched the motorcycle and sped off, we decided to chase him,” he said.

“He was eventually caught while trying to cross the road, but vehicles coming from Ankpa Quarter Junction blocked his escape.”

Tony added that the crowd, frustrated by recurring cases of armed robbery and the immediate threat to their community, acted before police patrols could arrive.

“Once we caught him, some youths went to a nearby vulcanizer’s workshop, brought out tyres, and set him ablaze,” he said.

The mob action, though violent, reflected the deep anger and fear residents feel over rising insecurity and theft.

The incident has drawn attention to the precarious situation of commercial motorcycle riders in Makurdi, many of whom are frequently targeted by armed thieves.

Okendu emphasized that motorcycles are often snatched at gunpoint, sometimes in broad daylight, despite government-imposed restrictions on night-time operations.

He appealed to authorities to intensify surveillance and provide better protection for riders.

Community members and security analysts noted that the mob’s reaction, while extreme, points to wider frustrations with law enforcement response times and the need for more proactive policing.

The proliferation of motorcycle thefts has become a recurring problem, undermining residents’ sense of safety and raising questions about security strategies in urban areas.

Security experts warn that mob justice, while understandable in the context of fear and anger, can lead to uncontrolled violence and potential legal consequences.

“The situation highlights a dual problem: first, rising criminality targeting vulnerable individuals, and second, the temptation of communities to take the law into their own hands,” said a Makurdi-based security analyst.

“Authorities must address both issues—by strengthening policing and improving community engagement—before incidents escalate further.”

For residents of Demekpe and surrounding areas, the tragic event is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance.

Many commercial riders have expressed anxiety over their safety, particularly in areas where rapid police response is unlikely.

Local stakeholders have called on the state government to explore measures such as community policing partnerships, CCTV surveillance at major junctions, and educational campaigns on safe riding practices.

Police officers from the ‘D’ Division later arrived at the scene, but by that time, the mob had already executed their act of vigilante justice.

While official reports have not yet disclosed the outcome of any investigation, the incident underscores a pattern of tension between local communities and formal law enforcement in parts of Benue State.

The motorcycle theft and subsequent mob killing have generated widespread discussion on social media, with residents and commentators debating both the causes of crime and the ethics of mob action.

Some argue that community enforcement is a necessary response to repeated thefts and slow police intervention, while others caution that taking the law into one’s hands can erode the rule of law and create cycles of violence.

Onoja Okendu, the motorcycle owner, remains deeply shaken by the incident.

“It is a major setback for me. I invested in this motorcycle to earn a living, but in just a few moments, everything changed,” he lamented.

His appeal to government and security agencies emphasizes the urgency of providing protection and preventing similar incidents in the future.

As Benue State grapples with rising incidents of armed theft, the Makurdi mob killing serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of both criminal activity and unchecked communal reprisals.

Authorities are urged to address the underlying causes of insecurity while promoting legal avenues for justice, in order to prevent both crime and vigilantism from escalating.

The event has reignited discussions about the safety of commercial riders and the need for systemic solutions to protect livelihoods.

With proper surveillance, rapid response teams, and community engagement programs, it is possible to reduce thefts and prevent tragedies fueled by mob justice.

Residents continue to hope that lessons from this incident will guide stronger security policies in the state.
