Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), the private concessionaire managing Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2) in Lagos, has announced plans to introduce a structured flight slot management framework aimed at improving efficiency, reducing congestion, and aligning airline operations with terminal capacity.
The proposed MMA2 slot system is scheduled for rollout in 2026 and is expected to mark a major shift in how aircraft movements are coordinated at one of Nigeria’s busiest domestic terminals.
The initiative follows an extensive review of operational performance during recent peak travel periods, particularly the year-end festive season, when passenger traffic surged significantly.
According to BASL, the new system is designed to ensure that flight schedules are more evenly distributed across available operational windows, reducing pressure on apron space, terminal facilities, and ground handling resources.
The company believes the initiative will enhance predictability, improve on-time performance, and deliver a smoother travel experience for passengers.
The Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Aeronautics and Cargo Services at MMA2, Remi Jibodu, explained that the introduction of the slot framework reflects a deliberate move toward modern airport capacity management practices.
He noted that uncontrolled clustering of flights during peak hours often leads to congestion, operational delays, and passenger dissatisfaction.
Jibodu said the MMA2 slot system would enable better coordination of aircraft arrivals and departures, allowing airlines to plan more effectively while giving ground handling companies clearer operational timelines.
He added that improved scheduling would also reduce the strain on airport infrastructure and personnel during high-demand periods.
He further explained that lessons learned from the most recent festive travel season highlighted the need for a more structured approach to managing demand.
During the peak period, MMA2 recorded a high volume of passenger traffic, with airlines operating extended schedules to meet increased travel needs.
Despite the pressure, the terminal maintained stable operations through close collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, security agencies, and service providers.
Jibodu said this teamwork ensured passenger comfort, safety, and continuity of services even as traffic levels rose.
To minimise flight disruptions, MMA2 extended its operating hours beyond scheduled closure times to accommodate late-night and delayed flights.
These extensions were carefully managed alongside routine maintenance activities to ensure safety standards were not compromised.
Additional operational staff and ground support equipment were also deployed to facilitate faster passenger processing and baggage handling.
According to Jibodu, the experience reinforced the importance of long-term planning and structured coordination among stakeholders within the terminal environment.

These enhancements, he said, were aimed at improving overall passenger satisfaction and encouraging repeat use of the terminal.
He added that customer convenience remained a central focus of management decisions, with improvements introduced in seating areas, cleanliness standards, and wayfinding within the terminal.
According to him, these upgrades helped MMA2 maintain positive passenger feedback during periods of heavy traffic.
Security and passenger-support systems also received significant attention. Bamigboye disclosed that enhancements to the terminal’s CCTV infrastructure improved surveillance coverage and response times.
These upgrades contributed to the successful recovery and return of several lost items, earning commendation from passengers who benefited from the improved systems.
In addition, MMA2 maintained an active customer experience email platform throughout the festive period, ensuring that passenger complaints and inquiries were promptly acknowledged and resolved.
Management said the initiative helped strengthen trust and transparency between the terminal and its users.
