Lagos fire claims life of 103-year-old woman in Oyingbo

A devastating Lagos fire outbreak in Oyingbo has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman, destroying homes, shops and properties worth millions.

A tragic Lagos fire outbreak has resulted in the death of a 103-year-old woman following a devastating inferno that razed a residential building in the Oyingbo area of Lagos Mainland.

The incident, which occurred in the late morning hours, left residents in shock and caused extensive destruction to homes, shops and personal belongings.

The fire reportedly broke out at a bungalow located at No. 8, Bola Street, off Kadara Street, Oyingbo.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the blaze began in one of the rooms within the residential structure before spreading swiftly to other parts of the building.

The property comprised multiple living apartments as well as adjoining commercial shops, which made the fire spread rapidly due to the presence of combustible materials.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that the agency received a distress alert through its 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at approximately 11:43 a.m.

According to him, the emergency call triggered an immediate activation of the state’s emergency response mechanism.

He explained that LASEMA’s response team was promptly mobilised from its Onipanu operational base and arrived at the scene at about 12:13 p.m.

By the time emergency officials got to the location, the Lagos fire outbreak had already escalated, with flames engulfing large sections of the bungalow and the attached shops.

Upon initial assessment, responders encountered a fully involved residential structure consisting of eight room-and-parlour apartments, one mini-flat, a self-contained apartment and six shops.

Household items, furniture, electrical appliances and commercial goods were also destroyed in the blaze.

Preliminary estimates put the value of the losses at several millions of naira, compounding the tragedy for affected residents and business owners.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated that emergency personnel immediately carried out a comprehensive risk assessment of the area.

The surroundings were cordoned off to ensure public safety and to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings, many of which are closely packed within the Oyingbo community.

Strategic safety measures were implemented as firefighters battled to contain the inferno.

Despite the intense heat and extensive damage, the combined efforts of the emergency responders eventually brought the fire under control.

However, during search and rescue operations, the remains of a 103-year-old woman were discovered within the affected building.

She was confirmed dead at the scene, making her the sole casualty recorded in the Lagos fire outbreak.

The remains of the deceased were respectfully recovered and handed over to her family members for burial arrangements.

Residents described the elderly woman as a long-time occupant of the building, adding that her advanced age may have limited her ability to escape when the fire broke out.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that investigations were ongoing to establish what triggered the incident.

He added that electrical faults, careless handling of flammable materials or other domestic hazards had not been ruled out.

The LASEMA boss commended the swift and coordinated response of all agencies involved in managing the Lagos fire outbreak.

These included officials of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and representatives of the Lagos Mainland Local Government.

Their collective intervention, he said, prevented further loss of lives and reduced the extent of damage.

The incident has once again highlighted the recurring challenge of fire disasters in densely populated parts of Lagos.

Experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of fire safety awareness, proper electrical installations and the availability of basic firefighting equipment in residential and commercial buildings.

Residents of the area have called on the government to intensify public education on fire prevention and to improve access to emergency response services.

For many affected families, the Lagos fire outbreak has left lasting emotional and financial scars, underscoring the need for stronger safety measures across the state.
