Lagos government enforces Single-Use Plastics ban, sealing supermarkets in Kosofe LGA to fight pollution and promote a cleaner, sustainable environment.
The Lagos State Government has intensified enforcement against Single-Use Plastics, sealing three supermarkets in Kosofe Local Government Area on Tuesday, October 29, 2025.
This decisive action targets businesses that continue to sell items packaged with banned plastics despite repeated warnings.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that Winny Supermarket, Afia Supermarket at Tipper Garage, Ketu, and Beyond Tastee2Go Restaurant on Ogudu Road, Ojota, were sealed after failing to comply with the state’s ban on Single-Use Plastics.

All non-compliant plastic materials were confiscated. Wahab emphasized that this operation is part of a broader effort to protect public health, curb environmental pollution, and promote sustainable waste management across Lagos.
“Enforcement teams conducted operations across multiple locations in Kosofe LGA today to ensure full compliance with the ban on Single-Use Plastics,” Wahab said.
“These closures serve as a warning to businesses: environmental laws will be strictly enforced.”
The Single-Use Plastics ban is critical to addressing long-standing environmental challenges in Lagos. Improper disposal of plastics has clogged drainage systems, contributing to severe flooding, water contamination, and urban pollution.
By enforcing this ban, Lagos State seeks to create a healthier, safer environment for its residents while fostering a culture of sustainability.
Authorities urge businesses to adopt eco-friendly alternatives, such as biodegradable packaging, reusable containers, and paper-based products.
Wahab highlighted that this initiative is part of Lagos State’s vision for a #CleanerLagos and #GreaterLagos, promoting responsible environmental practices and public participation in sustainability efforts.
The government’s approach combines enforcement and education. Businesses that fail to comply face closure and confiscation of plastics, while residents are encouraged to embrace reusable materials, proper disposal methods, and support for environmentally responsible vendors.
The closure of the three Kosofe LGA outlets demonstrates the government’s seriousness about eliminating Single-Use Plastics from the state. Enforcement operations will expand to other areas, ensuring consistent compliance and encouraging widespread adoption of sustainable practices.
By targeting violations, promoting awareness, and supporting eco-friendly solutions, Lagos State aims to reduce plastic pollution, prevent flooding, and build a resilient urban environment. The state is also setting a model for other Nigerian cities in environmental stewardship.
The Lagos State Government’s decisive actions against Single-Use Plastics reflect its commitment to environmental protection, public health, and sustainable urban development.
Residents and businesses are urged to join the movement toward greener practices, supporting Lagos’s goal of a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable megacity for all.
