Kogi State climbs to 10th position in 2025 SBM Health Preparedness Index

Kogi Health Preparedness Index shows major improvement under Governor Ododo, reflecting strong leadership, better infrastructure, and a renewed focus on quality healthcare.

Kogi State has achieved a remarkable milestone in the Kogi Health Preparedness Index, climbing from the 18th position in 2023 and 2024 to the 10th spot in 2025.

This achievement underscores the state government’s determination under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to strengthen healthcare delivery, improve emergency response, and ensure quality medical services reach every citizen.

Kogi State climbs to 10th position in 2025 SBM Health Preparedness Index

The 2025 Kogi Health Preparedness Index report, released by SBM Intelligence, ranks states based on their ability to respond effectively to health emergencies and sustain essential medical services.

Kogi’s impressive leap in the index is widely viewed as a result of consistent policy implementation, improved infrastructure, and a renewed commitment to people-oriented governance.

Speaking on the development, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, commended the achievement as a direct reflection of the Ododo administration’s dedication to human development.

According to him, the governor’s challenge to the health team has yielded tangible outcomes that now place Kogi among the top ten most prepared states in Nigeria.

“This is a direct response to the governor’s call for improvement. The Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdilazeez Adeiza Adams, has worked tirelessly to lift the state from the 18th position it held in 2023 and 2024. Now, the governor has urged the team to push even higher,” Fanwo said.

He added that the government’s efforts in strengthening the health sector were not just administrative but practical.

“When governance improves lives and enhances the capacity of our health system, that is the real measure of progress,” he noted.

For the Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdilazeez Adeiza Adams, the improvement in the Kogi Health Preparedness Index ranking reflects years of strategic planning and teamwork.

He attributed the progress to Governor Ododo’s leadership and the professionalism of Kogi’s healthcare workers.

“This achievement is a testament to visionary leadership and the commitment of our medical teams. We are proud of what we have achieved, but we are not relenting. Our next goal is to make Kogi a model of resilience, innovation, and excellence in Nigeria’s health system,” Dr. Adams said.

He also emphasized that the government is intensifying investments in primary healthcare, training more personnel, and expanding access to essential services across all local government areas. “We are building a system that ensures no community is left behind,” he added.

The Kogi Health Preparedness Index evaluates how well Nigeria’s 36 states can respond to health emergencies and provide sustainable healthcare.

It relies on data from credible national and international institutions, including the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), World Health Organization (WHO), The Lancet, Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), BudgIT, The Cable, the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Radboud University, and the Global Data Lab.

Key factors assessed in the index include budgetary allocation, infrastructure development, human resource capacity, and health outcomes.

Although no state met the 30 percent national target for full health preparedness, Kogi’s advancement represents one of the most significant improvements in recent years.

Observers note that this success story stems from Governor Ododo’s practical reforms and a holistic approach to healthcare management.

Under his administration, the state has revitalized several primary healthcare centers, renovated general hospitals, and introduced community-based health programs that focus on preventive care. These initiatives have increased access to healthcare and reduced the burden on tertiary health facilities.

Another major factor behind Kogi’s rise in the Kogi Health Preparedness Index is its investment in workforce development. Hundreds of nurses, midwives, and health extension workers have been trained and deployed to rural communities.

In addition, the government’s incentives for health professionals in hard-to-reach areas have improved staff retention and morale.

Technology has also played a role in transforming the sector. Through pilot telemedicine programs and digital record systems, Kogi is modernizing healthcare delivery, especially in underserved areas.

The integration of technology ensures faster diagnosis, real-time reporting, and better coordination during emergencies.

Furthermore, the government has prioritized public health education and disease prevention. Community outreach campaigns, vaccination drives, and awareness programs have helped reduce the incidence of preventable diseases.

By partnering with federal agencies, international donors, and local NGOs, the state has expanded the reach of its health programs and improved overall outcomes.

Governor Ododo’s administration has consistently emphasized accountability and transparency in the health sector.

The introduction of performance-based monitoring systems now ensures that healthcare projects are completed on schedule and resources are properly utilized. This approach has restored public confidence in government-led health initiatives.

While the latest ranking is a source of pride, the state government remains focused on achieving greater milestones.

According to Dr. Adams, “We aim not just to improve our ranking but to ensure that every resident of Kogi enjoys reliable, accessible, and affordable healthcare. Our long-term goal is universal health coverage that guarantees equity for all.”

Analysts have praised Kogi State’s steady progress, describing it as a model for other states aspiring to strengthen healthcare governance.

The 2025 Kogi Health Preparedness Index result, they say, proves that sustained leadership, policy consistency, and investment in human capital are key ingredients for transforming healthcare systems.

The Ododo administration’s success in health preparedness also mirrors its broader development philosophy — building a resilient state that prioritizes the well-being of its people.

Through continuous reforms and partnerships, Kogi is setting a new standard for subnational governance in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

As Kogi celebrates this new milestone, the message from the government remains clear: the journey toward a stronger and more inclusive healthcare system has only just begun.

With the ongoing implementation of new policies and projects, the state is well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory in future editions of the Kogi Health Preparedness Index.
