A Nigerian Army recruit from Gombe State has died during training in Zaria, prompting condolences from the state government and renewed focus on recruit welfare.
The Nigerian Army has been thrown into mourning following the death of a newly enlisted recruit from Gombe State, Ibrahim Nazifi, who passed away during a training exercise at the Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The incident has drawn attention to the physical demands of military training and the importance of recruit welfare within the armed forces.
Nazifi was among the successful candidates selected from Gombe State under the Nigerian Army Regular Recruit Intake, NA RRI 90.
He belonged to the first batch of recruits deployed from the state for basic military training, a critical phase designed to prepare young Nigerians for service and discipline within the armed forces.
Confirmation of the death came from the Gombe State Government through a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters and Intergovernmental Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Danbayo, on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
According to the statement, the recruit died after a brief illness while undergoing training at the Zaria military depot.
The late Ibrahim Nazifi was identified as a native of Buba Bani Village in Kashere Ward, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
Official records further revealed his application number as 90RRI-GO-9017726, placing him among the verified candidates accepted into the Nigerian Army recruitment process.
In his reaction, Ambassador Danbayo expressed deep sorrow over the development, describing the deceased as a young man who showed courage and patriotism by answering the call to serve his country.
He noted that Nazifi’s decision to enlist in the Nigerian Army reflected a commitment to national duty and a desire to contribute to Nigeria’s security architecture.
“It is with deep sorrow, humility, and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah that I announce the passing of Ibrahim Nazifi, one of our promising recruits undergoing training at the Nigerian Army Depot, Zaria,” Danbayo stated.
He explained that the loss extended beyond the immediate family, adding that the entire Gombe State felt the impact of the tragedy.
According to him, the state had high hopes for the young recruit, who was seen as a symbol of dedication and service to the nation.
The Nigerian Army training programme is widely known for its intensity, as it is designed to test the physical endurance, mental strength, and discipline of recruits.
While such exercises are essential for building capable soldiers, incidents like this often raise public concern about health monitoring, emergency response, and general welfare during training.
Danbayo emphasized that the state government stands in solidarity with the bereaved family, acknowledging the emotional pain associated with losing a loved one in service to the nation.
He described Nazifi’s passing as a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by young Nigerians who choose a military career.
“This painful loss is not only felt by his family but by the entire people of Gombe State and all well-wishers,” he said.
On behalf of the Gombe State Government, condolences were extended to the deceased’s parents, relatives, friends, and fellow recruits currently undergoing Army training at the Zaria depot.
Prayers were also offered for strength and comfort for the family during the difficult period.
Danbayo further prayed for divine mercy upon the soul of the deceased, asking that his intentions and efforts to serve the country be accepted as acts of worship.
He expressed hope that Almighty Allah would grant Nazifi eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with military training, even at the early stages of a soldier’s career.
Observers note that while the Nigerian Army continues to play a critical role in national security, ongoing attention to recruit health, medical screening, and rapid response to illness remains essential.
As investigations and internal procedures continue within the military system, the focus remains on honouring the memory of Ibrahim Nazifi, whose ambition to serve Nigeria was cut short during training.
His death serves as a solemn moment for reflection within the Nigerian Army and among the many families whose children enlist in the defence of the nation.
