Gateway International Airport Ogun State begins commercial operations, boosting connectivity, economic growth, and aviation development across southwestern Nigeria.
The Gateway International Airport Ogun State at Iperu Remo officially commenced scheduled commercial flights yesterday, marking a historic milestone in the state’s aviation and economic development.
Governor Dapo Abiodun inaugurated the first ValueJet Airlines flight to Abuja on a Bombardier CRJ jet, praising the project as a model of strategic planning, visionary leadership, and rapid execution.
Governor Abiodun emphasized that the airport’s location was chosen deliberately for its centrality and potential to drive Ogun State aviation and economic growth.
“This site is strategically positioned to enhance connectivity across road, rail, air, and water networks, supporting our broader vision for sustainable development and commerce in Ogun State,” he explained.
The journey of the Gateway International Airport Ogun State began in 2021 when the land, previously a forest and encroached dump site, was cleared for construction.
By February 2023, the first aircraft successfully landed on the newly constructed runway, making it one of Nigeria’s fastest-built airports.
The governor described the achievement as a testament to collaboration between the government, private sector, and aviation authorities.
“The speed and efficiency of this project demonstrate what is possible when governance is focused and partnerships are effective,” Abiodun said.

The airport’s completion is the result of coordinated efforts by ValueJet Airlines, the project implementation committee, and regulatory bodies including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
