The FCTA waste management system launches November 17, improving waste collection, treatment, and emergency sanitation services across Abuja for a cleaner city.

This initiative aims to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more organized Abuja, addressing long-standing challenges in waste collection, treatment, and environmental sanitation.

Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, emphasized the Minister’s dedication to environmental cleanliness.

“The Minister is particularly committed to this FCTA waste management system because effective waste management directly impacts the city’s health and livability,” he stated.

The Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC) Coordinator, Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, explained that the Executive Committee approved new contractors for waste collection and management across the territory.

The approval also includes the procurement of treatment plants and the maintenance of supervisory utility vehicles.

Chief Obuah said the FCTA waste management system will improve operational efficiency and ensure residents experience a cleaner, more orderly city.

In addition to central Abuja, the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), led by Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, disclosed the approval of an emergency waste evacuation contract in the Dogon Gada community within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Valued at ₦111,913,176, this contract focuses on clearing refuse from open dumps, waterways, and streams.

“This step is crucial to extend the reach of the FCTA waste management system to satellite towns, ensuring consistent sanitation standards,” Zulkiflu added.

The FCT Transportation Secretary, Hon. Chinedum Elechi, highlighted complementary initiatives supporting city orderliness, including funds for printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS), the maintenance of 34 traffic lights, and installation of three new traffic lights across the Federal Capital City.

These measures align with broader efforts to enhance urban management alongside the FCTA waste management system.

Experts in urban planning have praised the initiative, noting that a comprehensive waste management system is vital for sustainable city development.

By integrating treatment plants, emergency waste evacuation, and strict contractor oversight, the FCTA waste management system sets a high standard for environmental cleanliness in the FCT.

Residents are encouraged to participate actively by following proper waste disposal guidelines and cooperating with sanitation officers.

Public awareness campaigns will educate communities on waste segregation, recycling, and environmental stewardship, reinforcing the effectiveness of the FCTA waste management system.

Chief Obuah expressed optimism about the initiative’s impact: “Abuja is poised to become cleaner and healthier. The FCTA waste management system reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and city-wide sanitation excellence.”

The launch of this initiative also represents a step toward sustainable urban development, with potential economic benefits in recycling and environmental services.

By ensuring strict compliance, timely waste evacuation, and continuous monitoring, the FCTA aims to transform Abuja into a cleaner, safer, and more livable city.

The FCTA waste management system promises a major improvement in waste management and environmental hygiene across the FCT.

With strong government oversight and active citizen engagement, Abuja is set to achieve world-class sanitation standards.
