Falconets defeat Ghana in WAFU U-20 Women’s cup opener

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, made an impressive start at the WAFU B U-20 Women’s Cup as Falconets defeat Ghana 3-1 on Saturday.

The thrilling encounter, hosted at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto-Novo, saw the Nigerians deliver a composed and commanding performance against their West African rivals.

Janet Akeremkowei opened the scoring for Nigeria from the penalty spot five minutes before halftime after a Ghanaian defender handled the ball under pressure inside the area.

The spot kick gave the Falconets a well-deserved lead after dominating possession and creating multiple chances that tested the Black Princesses’ defence throughout the first period.

Just before the interval, Akeremkowei doubled Nigeria’s advantage, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to calmly slot past the goalkeeper, sending the Nigerian bench into jubilation.

The Ghanaians looked stunned as the Falconets continued to push forward aggressively, displaying sharp coordination between midfield and attack under the technical guidance of coach Chris Musa Danjuma.

Early in the second half, Ghana found a lifeline when Sarah Nyarko finished off a swift counterattack, reducing the deficit and momentarily putting Nigeria under pressure.

However, the Falconets quickly regained control, maintaining composure in midfield and restricting Ghana’s attacking rhythm with a disciplined defensive shape anchored by captain Esther Onyenezide.

As the match entered its final stages, the Nigerians looked determined to seal victory, refusing to let Ghana build any meaningful momentum in the closing minutes.

Their persistence paid off when Favour Nkwocha unleashed a thunderous strike from 20 yards, restoring Nigeria’s two-goal cushion and effectively ending any hopes of a Ghanaian comeback.

The goal, two minutes from time, showcased the Falconets’ attacking flair and relentless drive — key attributes that have defined Nigeria’s dominance in the women’s youth category.

With the result, Falconets defeat Ghana 3-1 to top Group A, positioning themselves favourably for a semifinal berth in the regional competition.

Head coach Chris Musa Danjuma praised his players for their tactical discipline and clinical finishing, stressing the importance of maintaining focus in subsequent matches.

“We prepared extensively for this tournament, and I’m proud of the way the girls executed our game plan today,” Danjuma told reporters after the match in Porto-Novo.

He added that Ghana remains a strong opponent with a rich football culture, but Nigeria’s mental strength and teamwork made the difference when it mattered most.

The victory also extended Nigeria’s impressive record against Ghana at youth level, reaffirming their superiority in West African women’s football competitions over the past decade.

Analysts noted that Akeremkowei’s composure in front of goal and Nkwocha’s creativity were standout elements that troubled Ghana’s backline throughout the encounter.

The Falconets have now scored three or more goals in four of their last six matches, a testament to their improved offensive cohesion under coach Danjuma’s system.

Goalkeeper Faith Omilana also earned praise for her commanding presence and key saves that kept Ghana from levelling the score during a tense spell in the second half.

Supporters in Porto-Novo hailed the result as a morale-boosting performance, especially as Nigeria eyes another title to solidify its reputation as a continental powerhouse.

Nigeria’s dominance was evident from kickoff, as the Falconets pressed high and forced errors, displaying maturity beyond their years in both defensive and attacking transitions.

The team’s ability to adapt tactically against a physically strong Ghanaian side underlined their progress and readiness to contend for greater honours beyond the WAFU stage.

According to team sources, the coaching crew emphasized pressing intensity and fast wing play during their final training session — tactics that proved decisive during the match.

Ghana’s Black Princesses, on the other hand, struggled to recover from their first-half setback despite occasional flashes of brilliance from Nyarko and captain Evelyn Kyei.

Their coach admitted that Nigeria’s superior organization and quick decision-making exposed weaknesses his side must address before their next group-stage clash against Burkina Faso.

As part of their schedule, the Falconets defeat Ghana result means Nigeria will next face tournament hosts Benin Republic on Sunday morning before a return meeting with Ghana on Tuesday.

Victory in those fixtures will guarantee their progression to the final, which is slated for Wednesday, November 12, at the same venue in Porto-Novo.

Nigeria’s Football Federation (NFF) officials in attendance expressed satisfaction with the team’s display, highlighting their discipline and creativity as hallmarks of the developmental program.

The Falconets’ performance also reflects the continued investment in women’s football development by the NFF, which recently increased funding for youth competitions and coaching infrastructure.

In recent years, the Falconets have consistently represented Africa at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, finishing as runners-up twice and semi-finalists on multiple occasions.

This latest result reinforces Nigeria’s ambition to reclaim its status as Africa’s most dominant force at youth level while preparing the next generation for senior national duty.

Star forward Akeremkowei dedicated her brace to Nigerian fans, saying their support inspired the team to push harder despite Ghana’s physical approach and humid conditions in Benin.

She emphasized that teamwork and communication on the pitch were key factors behind the victory, adding that every player followed the tactical plan to perfection.

Midfielder Onyenezide also highlighted the importance of staying humble, reminding her teammates that one victory does not guarantee success in a short, high-intensity tournament.

Coach Danjuma echoed similar sentiments, insisting that the focus must shift quickly to the next match while correcting minor defensive lapses noticed in the second half.

He confirmed that the medical staff will monitor two players who sustained minor knocks, though none of the injuries are expected to affect the team’s lineup against Benin.

Fans across social media celebrated the Falconets defeat Ghana triumph, flooding platforms with congratulatory messages and videos of the girls dancing joyfully after the full-time whistle.

Local sports analysts believe this generation of Falconets could match or surpass the achievements of previous squads if they maintain consistency throughout the competition.

Football enthusiasts from Nigeria’s grassroots leagues praised the team’s spirit, noting that such performances inspire young girls aspiring to play professional football in the future.

The WAFU B Women’s Cup serves as a crucial platform for nurturing young talent and bridging the gap between domestic leagues and international exposure for West African nations.

Nigeria’s victory not only boosts morale but also strengthens their bid for continental recognition as they continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

With momentum on their side, the Falconets defeat Ghana result sends a strong warning to other teams in the tournament that Nigeria remains the side to beat in women’s youth football.

As the squad turns attention to their next challenge, the Falconets remain confident of maintaining their winning streak and lifting the regional trophy on Wednesday.
