Ademola Lookman records 50th club assist as Mubarak Suleiman matches Alex Iwobi’s Champions League record

Ademola Lookman recorded his 50th senior club assist as Mubarak Suleiman matched Alex Iwobi’s Nigerian teenage record in the UEFA Champions League, highlighting another memorable night for Nigerian footballers in Europe’s elite club competition.

Lookman reached the milestone after providing the assist for Julian Alvarez’s equaliser in Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Stuttgart. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Suleiman made history by becoming the first Nigerian teenager to start a Champions League match since Iwobi achieved the feat for Arsenal in March 2016.

The two achievements underlined the growing presence of Nigerian players on European football’s biggest stage, with Lookman continuing to deliver at the highest level and Suleiman taking an important step in his development at Slavia Prague.

Lookman Reaches 50 Club Assists in Atletico Madrid Draw

Lookman came off the bench at half-time with Atletico Madrid trailing Stuttgart by a goal. The German side had controlled much of the opening period and taken the lead through Jamie Leweling in the 36th minute.

Leweling struck a low effort from the edge of the penalty area to put Stuttgart ahead, leaving Atletico with work to do after the interval.

However, Lookman made an immediate impact after entering the contest. Barely 80 seconds into the second half, the Super Eagles forward found Alvarez unmarked inside the penalty area.

The Argentine striker finished the opportunity to bring Atletico level, with Lookman registering the assist barely a minute after the restart.

According to Transfermarkt, the contribution took Lookman’s senior club career assists to 50, marking a significant milestone for the Nigerian international.

His ability to influence matches after coming off the bench once again demonstrated the attacking quality that has made him an important option for Atletico.

Alvarez Ends Goal Drought With Equaliser

Alvarez’s goal was his first of the season, providing a timely boost after a summer dominated partly by speculation about his future.

Barcelona had reportedly explored the possibility of bringing the Argentine forward to the club, but he remained at Atletico Madrid.

The equaliser gave Atletico renewed momentum after Stuttgart’s strong first-half performance. Lookman’s quick intervention also helped change the atmosphere of a match that had initially appeared to be moving in the visitors’ favour.

Atletico subsequently faced another challenge when midfielder Morten Hjulmand was sent off in the 64th minute for a reckless challenge on Angelo Stiller.

Reduced to 10 men, Atletico had to concentrate on protecting their point against a Stuttgart side determined to regain the lead.

Stuttgart defender Jeff Chabot came close to finding a late winner when he headed wide from a Maximilian Mittelstadt corner, but Atletico held on for a 1-1 draw.

Although neither side secured victory, Lookman’s contribution and personal milestone provided a positive talking point for Nigerian football supporters.

Mubarak Suleiman Matches Alex Iwobi’s Record

While Lookman celebrated his achievement in Spain, teenage Nigerian midfielder Mubarak Suleiman reached a significant milestone of his own during Slavia Prague’s Champions League encounter against Fenerbahce.

Suleiman started the match at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Tuesday night, becoming the first Nigerian teenager to start a Champions League game since Iwobi featured for Arsenal against Barcelona in March 2016, according to Opta Joe.

The achievement placed the Slavia Prague youngster in notable company, with Iwobi having established himself as one of Nigeria’s prominent football exports after progressing through Arsenal’s youth system.

At just 19, Suleiman’s starting appearance represents an important opportunity to gain experience against established European opposition.

His involvement also reflects the progress he has made at Slavia Prague, where he continues to pursue regular opportunities and develop his game at senior level.

Suleiman Shows Promise Against Fenerbahce

Despite the pressure of playing away from home in the Champions League, Suleiman contributed to Slavia Prague’s attacking efforts.

The midfielder recorded two key passes and completed six accurate passes into the final third, demonstrating his willingness to help create opportunities and move the team forward.

He remained involved until the closing stages before being replaced by Pavel Kacor with five minutes remaining.

Suleiman has registered one goal and one assist in eight appearances across all competitions this season, figures that offer an indication of his growing involvement in the team.

His Champions League start represents another important stage in his development as he seeks to establish himself at club level and attract further attention from Nigeria’s senior national team selectors.

Slavia Prague Fight Back From Two Goals Down

Suleiman’s historic appearance came during a dramatic 2-2 draw against Fenerbahce, with Slavia Prague recovering from an early two-goal deficit to earn a point.

Fenerbahce appeared to have taken control after scoring twice inside the opening 11 minutes. Oguz Aydin and Mason Greenwood found the net to give the Turkish side a commanding early advantage.

Slavia Prague responded quickly, however, and reduced the deficit in the 15th minute.

Lukas Provod capitalised after Matteo Guendouzi misplaced a pass, giving the visitors a route back into the contest and restoring some confidence to the team.

Slavia continued searching for an equaliser, refusing to allow the early setback to determine the outcome of the match.

Their persistence paid off in the 90th minute when Kacor produced an acrobatic volley to make it 2-2.

The goal was particularly significant for the 20-year-old, who scored his first senior goal for Slavia Prague.

Nigerian teammate Emmanuel Ayaosi supplied the cross that created the opportunity, adding another Nigerian connection to the dramatic finish.

The late equaliser rescued a point for Slavia, who had not previously managed to collect a point in this season’s competition.

For Suleiman, the match combined a personal milestone with a valuable team result, providing further encouragement as he continues his development in European football.

Suleiman Eyes Another Super Eagles Opportunity

Suleiman’s progress at Slavia Prague could strengthen his hopes of returning to the Nigeria national team setup.

The midfielder had been expected to feature for the Super Eagles in a friendly against Russia but subsequently withdrew from the squad.

His latest Champions League appearance gives him another opportunity to demonstrate his readiness for the demands of senior international football.

Regular involvement in European competition could also help him gain the experience required to compete for a place among Nigeria’s midfield options.

However, maintaining consistency at club level will remain important as he seeks to build on his latest achievement.

At 19, Suleiman still has time to develop physically, tactically and technically. His Champions League start nevertheless represents a notable accomplishment, particularly given the length of time since Iwobi last started a match in the competition as a Nigerian teenager.

Nigerian Players Make Their Mark in Europe

Lookman and Suleiman reached their milestones in different circumstances, but both performances highlighted the contributions Nigerian footballers continue to make in European club competitions.

For Lookman, the assist against Stuttgart added another achievement to a senior career that has included experience across several European leagues.

His 50-assist milestone reflects his contribution not only as a goalscorer but also as a creator capable of setting up teammates in decisive moments.

For Suleiman, the significance lies in becoming the first Nigerian teenager since Iwobi in 2016 to start a Champions League match.

The teenager’s performance against Fenerbahce, including his two key passes and involvement in the attacking build-up, provided encouraging signs for his future.

Both players will now be looking to maintain their progress as the season continues, with Lookman aiming to deliver more decisive contributions for Atletico Madrid and Suleiman seeking to establish himself further at Slavia Prague.

Their achievements offer Nigerian supporters fresh reasons for optimism about the country’s representation in European football, particularly as younger players seek opportunities to follow the path established by more experienced internationals.
