Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has officially inaugurated commercial operations at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, a project designed to position the state as a key player in Nigeria’s aviation and logistics sectors.
The development comes as part of a broader effort by the state government to enhance infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and expand regional connectivity.
Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Oyebanji revealed that the state government invested a total of N49.7 billion into the airport, highlighting the scale and commitment of his administration to completing a project that has spanned multiple administrations.
“This moment is not just the official opening of the airport to commercial passenger operations; it is the launch of a new chapter in our transportation infrastructure development journey,” he said.
Ekiti Airport Inauguration: A Multi-Generational Effort
The Ekiti airport inauguration celebrates the cumulative efforts of at least three past governors. The project was initially conceived by Chief Segun Oni, advanced during Governor Ayo Fayose’s administration, and further developed by Dr Kayode Fayemi.
Governor Oyebanji’s administration oversaw the final stages of construction, ensuring the airport met regulatory standards for commercial operations.
The first commercial flight, operated by United Nigeria Airlines, brought a host of dignitaries including former governors, National Assembly members from Ekiti, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, Yakubu Kofarmata, from Abuja.
The flight was ceremonially welcomed by the governor, members of his cabinet, and other key stakeholders, underscoring the event’s significance.
Ekiti Airport Inauguration: Financial Overview and Infrastructure Details
Governor Oyebanji disclosed that previous administrations had expended N14 billion on the airport from May 2019 to October 2022, covering site preparation, regulatory approvals, runway construction, terminal building, control tower, aprons, access roads, and initial equipment procurement.
His administration, he added, spent over N34 billion completing outstanding works, which included terminal and control tower completion, fencing, drainage, service roads, and installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS).
Further enhancing operational capacity, the state partnered with Reeve Energy Nigeria Limited to construct an aviation fuel tank, while staff quarters and other facilities are under development.
The airport inauguration represents not just infrastructure completion but also a boost in operational readiness for commercial flights and cargo handling.
Ekiti Airport Inauguration and Economic Implications
The Ekiti airport inauguration is expected to drive substantial economic benefits, particularly in logistics, tourism, trade, and investment.
Governor Oyebanji emphasized that the airport would bring markets closer to local businesses and connect Ekiti to the global economy.
“I urge our people to seize the opportunities air connectivity offers and tap into the economic potential of the aviation sector,” he noted.
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, represented by Permanent Secretary Yakubu Kofarmata, hailed the inauguration as a historic milestone.
He said the airport symbolizes renewed hope for job creation, tourism expansion, and regional development.
Similarly, Dr Kayode Fayemi lauded Governor Oyebanji for delivering on the promise to complete the airport, praising contractors for maintaining quality despite financial constraints.
Stakeholder Endorsements and Public-Private Partnership Success
Aare Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, contributed navigational aids worth $1.6 million and constructed a 100-car capacity parking lot valued at N356.795 million, reflecting the impact of private sector collaboration on public infrastructure.

John Zhao, Executive Director of CCECC Nigeria Ltd, the lead contractor, described the commercial launch as a transformative milestone, labeling the airport as “Ekiti’s new sky gateway” that would boost employment, logistics, tourism, exports, and overall investment.
Outlook: Ekiti Airport Inauguration as a Catalyst for Future Development
The airport inauguration not only enhances Ekiti’s transportation framework but also represents a strategic platform for future development.
Analysts suggest that improved air connectivity will encourage private investment, increase business opportunities, and enhance the state’s competitiveness within Nigeria and beyond.
The facility also positions Ekiti to host international cargo operations, potentially opening doors to regional trade expansion.
In conclusion, the Ekiti airport inauguration exemplifies a successful infrastructure project driven by visionary governance, inter-administrative collaboration, and public-private partnerships.
With operational flights now underway, the state is poised to leverage its new aviation hub to create economic growth, improve accessibility, and strengthen its position as a forward-looking, development-oriented region.
